Mit fogunk csinálni?

We'll jump right into exploring the secret history of the Lost Village of Dookinella by starting our walk at the haunting semi-pagan village cillíni, an ancient unconsecrated graveyard, where local mothers over the past centuries were forced by the Catholic Church to bury unbaptisted babies. Kevin, whose aunt is buried in this cillíni, will explain all the folklore and religious history behind such cillíni across Ireland.

As we walk along the stunning ocean foreshore Kevin will talk about the extraordinary geological forces over the last 400 million years that has shaped the landscape and coastline of Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way, Achill Island and the magnificent three mile long beach at Dookinella.

We will then go on to explore the ruins of the old village of Dookinella which is normally fenced off and impossible to visit, including Kevin's great, great, grandfather's house dating from the 1830s. We will visit the monument to a rebel priest Father Manus Sweeney who was born in the village and hanged by the British in 1798 in the Year of the French - when a French army invaded Mayo and declared a revolutionary republic. Kevin is also an expert on Irish Republicanism.
Other things to note
The weather along Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way is unpredictable so bring warm clothing if you think you will be cold.

Hol leszünk?

Dookinella was once the biggest village on Achill but ravaged by religious conflict, the 1840s Famine and emigration the village fell into ruin. Many islanders were forced to leave the village forever - their descendants scatted across the face of the Earth. This exclusive walking tour by the writer Kevin Toolis, whose family have lived in the village for 250 years, explores those lost ruins and tells that universal story of Irish emigration.
