Mit fogunk csinálni?

We'll visit the French quarter of Hanoi where layers of architecture are displayed: Sino-Vietnamese temples, French magnificence and Art Deco buildings are mixed with stalwart Russian, tube houses, and concrete-of-the-future. I'll share with you secret stories that the buildings have carried with them as time goes by and turbulence swept through the city. Imagine how Charlie Chaplin spent his honeymoon here. Imagine a generation of local artists who obtained education in European arts, and experimented their newly-developed skills with designing, the families of traditional mandarins and wealthy traders who occupied this little space - until the revolution changed everyone's life. As eclectic as Hanoi itself, the buildings represent the burden of life and the lightness of being.

Let your curiosity roam in the "living museum" of Hanoi, and ask as many questions as you'd like. Maybe after that you'd see that buildings are not just buildings. Communal tradition, colonisation, revolution, wars, globalisation all compete to leave their marks in this town. As your personal guide, I'll be happy to walk you through the thick and thin of Hanoi history, its architecture and living space.
Other things to note
As a professional researcher, my stories are well-researched, i.e. you would unlikely hear them from any other local sources.
If you have any concern or question, please do not hesitate to ask.

Born in Hanoi during wartime, grew up in extreme poverty and hardship, Lien manages to make herself a global citizen. Extensive travel and experience living overseas made Lien realise how Hanoi history shapes the lives of its residents. Such history can be seen through Hanoi's buildings. Unlike the "controlled chaos" of traffic that challenges your minds crossing streets, buildings are immobile and give a safe distance for your imagination. Unleash your curiosity and experience the lightness of being a Hanoian with Lien.

Hol leszünk?

Among the buildings that we visit, No. 7 Nguyen Thuong Hien housed an aspiring revolutionary who chose to study English in the 1940s and hide secret materials under the stairway. No. 45 Nguyen Thuong Hien nearby, now a KFC store, was where one of Vietnam's most talented musicians composed the national anthem at the age of 21.

I am so glad I did this. Probably the best introduction to Hanoi you could find. Lien is a lawyer with a Ph.D. From Melbourne who weaves the socio-political history of Vietnam and Hanoi into the divergent architectural tapestry of this amazing city. She does not limit the tour to the building marvels and magnificent, but takes you to the ugly, the failures, and the sad stories that city planning tells. At the governor’s home, she pointed out the bullet wounds in the iron fencing from the French re-taking of Hanoi in 1945. We passed a small day care center that Lien proudly reported was started by Hồ Chí Minh himself, still in operation today. She laughed as she pointed out the Russian inspired housing, appointed for Party members only (the housing were dumps). She described lost historical structures whose memories are allocated to the dust-bins of poor archives. In one neighborhood, she painted a bohemian-era of artisans, Parisian-inspired surrealists and neo-expressionists, poets, painters, and writers all building a community of art in early 1900 Hanoi. Lien laces history with myth to reflect her ongoing study of Hanoi’s buildings. She knows the local people and gains access to areas you would miss. I won’t say this is a tour-light, far from it. Her knowledge can be overwhelming. Lien gives an impressive immersion into Hanoi that will echo through your time in Vietnam. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

If you want to understand Hanoi at a deeper level then choose this tour.  My girlfriend and I were a couple of weeks in Hanoi. We wandered around town the first day and then we decided to book a dedicated tour and we did not regret it! The guide Lien is lively, knowledgeable and funny. Her English was nearly perfect and you feel that she has really done research on the city. You get a lot of information that you normally would not get and go to places you probably won't go to. The only downside I can think of is that the tour is filled with so much information in a very short time, but that is just because Lien is so passionate about the city 🤗 So if you are interested in the history of Vietnam and Hanoi and want som unique insights then definitely choose this tour.

I have learned tremendously during the time spent with Lien. Without her I would not be able to appreciate the beautiful architecture of Hanoi and the history behind it. Thank you Lien for sharing your city with me!

Very nice trip around some neighbourhoods of central Hanoi. We particularly enjoyed getting more familiar with some local buildings and their links to the city's historical and architectural background.

The right experience to understand Hanoi’s past beyond the usual landmarks.
