Deer Isle is a lesser traveled but stunningly beautiful part of the Maine coastline. GlimmerGlass Cottage, tucked in the woods, the ocean a mile away, echoes the area's rustic appeal and artistic good taste. Bar Harbor and Acadia are accessible, but can easily take over 1.5 hours each way on busy roads. You'll find plenty to do and see right on Deer Isle. July and August are high season, so plan ahead! Off season rates in September.

Picture perfect, total comfort in one bedroom compact apartment attached to a working stained glass studio. Perfect for one or two adults only, and sorry, we cannot host children or pets. Nestled in the woods on a quiet country road, just a half mile from Sylvester's Cove and Penobscot Bay. Your own kitchenette for light meals, a sun and shade deck overlooking our gardens. A small BBQ available by request for grilling.
We designed and built this adorable space for ourselves and our favorite guests. Everything in it has been chosen for comfort and beauty. Sleep under handmade quilts on a feather bed with the glow of a custom stained glass window as a night light. Relax in the tiny parlor and watch a movie from our DVD collection, have coffee and read on your own deck. Make breakfast (I'll treat you to blueberry muffins or popovers one morning, if you wish) or a sandwich in the efficient kitchenette, fridge (stocked with a few basics), coffee maker, microwave and toaster oven provided. Your own modern bath has an extra large shower and plenty of hot water.
Visit us in our studio: watch a stained glass window being built or an antique one being restored. If you've always wanted to give stained glass work a try, here's your chance: Lessons by arrangement. See "House Rules" for more details.
Kathryn makes hand-dyed silk scarves. If she is dying, you are welcome to watch. Any time, take a look at the finished products and feel free to purchase your favorites.

We look to our guests to tell us how much interaction they want. If you want to be left alone, you will be. We are available for advice on the area, and the stained glass studio is open for tours or lessons. We always like to hear what guests have enjoyed.

Deer Isle is beautiful in its own quieter way. It is definitely not Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park (though you can get to the Isle au Haut portion of the park from Stonington, by mail boat). There are families who have come here every summer for over 100 years. If what you really are looking for IS Acadia, you should stay on Mount Desert Island. The trip to there from Deer Isle takes at least 1.5 hours, on a good day.
Kayaking, hiking, sailing, biking, Farmers’ Markets, Tinderhearth wood-fired pizza, 44 North coffee, Flash in the Pans (a steel drum band) street dances, Opera House Arts live performances and movies. From your own deck: crystal clear night-time skies and a zillion stars. Movies via Glimmerglass's dvd collection.
Month by month:
May: Haystack opens with Island Workshop Day and Maine Crafts Association Weekend. Wings, Waves & Woods: Festival for “birding by land, by sea and by art”. Puffin and pelagic boat trips, eagle spotting, lectures, walks (Mid month). The Memorial Day parade- the traditional start of the summer season
June: Deer Isle "wakes up." Restaurants and inns open.Stonington’s Opera House Arts gears up for a summer of live performances and movies.
July and August: The island’s 4th celebration is not to be missed and signals the beginning of the intense July and August tourist season. Too many events during these two months to list, but here are a few: sailing races, Haystack evening lectures open to the public, Kneisel Hall concerts in Blue Hill, Farmers’ Markets, two on Deer Isle, many more in surrounding towns.
September and October: Things quiet down, the weather turns crisp and cooler, the leaves turn brilliant. MOFGA's Common Ground Country Fair is in September, the Blue Hill Fair (of E. B. White's "Charlotte's Web" fame) Labor Day weekend. First-run movies start up at the Opera House!
We live quietly, for the most part, and love guests who do likewise. Glimmerglass is a small and exquisite space, suitable for one or two adults only. We've taken great care to make it comfortable and pretty, spotlessly clean. We expect guests to feel at home and treat the space kindly. Sorry, we cannot accommodate children or pets. Smoking outside on deck only, and with caution: a fire would be pretty awful.

The charge, which includes instruction, studio space and all tools and materials, is $125.00 / person, or $100.00 each for two.
I am a native Mainer, now doing the classic "Winters in Florida" after too many harsh winters. My husband and I just did our second retirements (psychotherapist and romance coach for me, Corps of Engineers research scientist and college prof for him) and are now able to be in our Maine house through the summer and into the fall (best time of year, the fall...). We've been airbnb hosts for two summer seasons and had a great experience with all of out guests.
