This space comfortably fits four people; you can squeeze a fifth person in if they are tiny enough to sleep on a loveseat or if you want to borrow a sleeping bag and foam mattress! (There is an aditional $50 charge for each guest after the first four guests).
BEDROOM: In this tranquil aqua and cream space there is a brand new firm queen bed fitted with cotton/linen blend sheets and multiple fluffy pillows. The bedroom is a peaceful space with candles and a raw cedar wall that will lull you to sleep with dreams of old-growth forests. This bedroom has a full closet with hangers, suit bags, shelves for storage, and a drying rack and clothespins for your delicate hand-washables, as well as your own laundry basket. There is a door to the bedroom with an old-fashioned hook and eye lock.
LIVING ROOM: The living room, decorated with First Nations artifacts, has one couch (which opens into a double bed) and a love seat. If you really want to squeeze in one more little one, they can sleep on the love seat (or in a sleeping bag on a floor mattress which we can provide if you prefer). Extra blankets are in the plaid basket and in the footstool/coffee table thingy. In the living room is where you will find some ENTERTAINMENT options: Lonely Planet Guidebook, Canadian authors, local history, First Nations art books, cards, games, a new Smart TV (Netflix!), and Wifi. We have more games upstairs, so if you have a favourite, let Katy know, as we just might have it. And if you want to lose your socks (a toonie!) challenge Katy to a game of Parchisi, our family favourite!
KITCHEN: There is a fully-equipped kitchen with refrigerator/freezer, stove, oven, microwave, toaster oven, blender (smoothies!), rice cooker, and coffee maker. You have pots, pans, cutlery, utensils, coffee mugs and made-in-USA glassware and made-in-France dishes and frying pan. A portable dishwasher is available for your use-- let your host know and it will be moved into the kitchen. Olive oil, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, canola oil, vanilla extract, baking powder, baking soda, cornstarch, coffee whitener, rice, flour, coffee, oatmeal, cream of wheat, cornmeal, pasta, spaghetti sauce, Mr. Noodles, peanut butter, jam, maple syrup, honey, sugar, a full complement of spices, tinfoil, parchment paper, and plastic wrap are all complimentary for your use during your stay. You will also receive a LIGHT breakfast (such as juice and pastries) for each morning of your stay. In addition, there is a convenient variety of snacks and groceries available for purchase in our honour pantry, and you are always welcome to bring in foods that you purchase -- there are several low-cost grocery stores within walking distance -- or why not get something yummy at the Farmers' market? There are also a number of food delivery options servicing our location.
WASHROOM: Just your standard bathroom with a toilet, shower, and sink. Sadly, there will be no long soaks in the tub during your stay; this is an eco-friendly shower-only washroom. However, we can point you in the direction of many local pools and hot tubs if you want to float in hot water. If you need to bathe a little one, please ask your host for the PORTABLE BASIN. There are fluffy towels, a hair dryer, a stool for smaller guests, and complimentary shampoo, hand soap, shower gel, and emergency toiletries (as well as a few larger specialty toiletry items available for purchase in case there is something you forgot to bring or run out of during your stay). Extra towels are in on the bottom shelf in a big square lidded tub marked "extra towels." Please put dirty towels in the wicker basket when you leave.
HALLWAY: Do you want to have a beach day or go on a picnic? Perhaps a concert on the Great Lawn in Stanley Park? Please use our portable picnic backpack and blanket, and/or the four folding chairs complete in carry sacks while you are our guest. (If you fall in love with the picnic backpack there are new ones available for purchase.) This is Vancouver, so you will find your complimentary umbrellas here as well!! Also in the hallway is our Souvenir Stand, where you can purchase Canadian souvenirs -- proceeds of the Souvenir Stand support your host family's eldest daughter, who is attending college in New Jersey. If you are looking for something special, please tell Katy, as she has more inventory upstairs-- including an original Hudson's Bay Company blanket!! Please note that the hallway is a shared space that your host may need to access in case of emergency (as it contains access to the circuit breakers, heater, and water heater) or to restock items from the private storage area. All care will be taken to inform guests by knocking and/or texting before the common area is entered by your host, as we do not want to disturb your privacy unless absolutely necessary.
YARD: There is a fenced back yard with trees, Muskoka chairs for lounging, and a barbecue. There is a children's swingset in the front yard (please supervise children closely). Dogs should be kept on leash and please pick up the poop!! Our yard is organic and no pesticides have been applied to the grass for ten-plus years. The door to your suite is a chalkboard for any artists who visit; there is another chalk board in the front yard and chalk is in the hallway and in the rural mailbox in the front yard-- we can't wait to see your creations! There are two great playgrounds and a nice park all within walking distance. Please feel free to use the barbecue in the back yard.
LAUNDRY: Please feel free to use the full-size washer and dryer conveniently located adjacent to your suite. We are in the process of installing a display about the history of the Chinese laundries in Canada as part of our laundry room renovation. You may use any of the soaps or stain removers free of charge while you are our guests.
WHAT ELSE? Well, this is Vancouver, renowned for outdoor adventures! Let us know if you want to borrow some sporting equipment. We have bikes, a razor scooter, tennis racquets, soccer balls and nets, an inflatable raft, water floats, sleds, tire chains for cars (in case you want to go up into the mountains in winter), camping equipment, etc. If there is something special you need, just tell us, we might have it!
Once you enter the suite from the common hallway it is all yours!!

She will get back to you as soon as she can. She and her son (as well as Sunny the dog and Zoëcat) live in the house upstairs from the suite, so you might be able to catch them to say a brief hello during your stay.

I was born in California and grew up in North Carolina and New Jersey. I have an undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in English and French Literature. I have studied and worked in France. I lived in Seattle for 9 years, obtaining my MSW at the University of Washington School of Social Work. I immigrated to Canada in 1998 and have lived in Vancouver for the past 18 years, working as a Case Manager for severely mentally ill adults. I have a beautiful daughter at university in New Jersey and a wonderful son who is a soccer referee and has just started high school. I have a dog, Sunny, and a cat, Zoecat. With my friends, I am a refugee sponsor for a young man from Syria, who I hope will arrive to Vancouver soon! I humbly acknowledge that I live and work on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded Indigenous territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, and in particular, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
