Our rental guest house is an architectural masterpiece designed and painstakingly built by the acclaimed artist Richard Harden. A little over 2 hours by car from Boston and New York City, we are located in the lovely hamlet of Barkhamsted in Northwest Connecticut, one of Litchfield County’s best kept secrets. With the beautiful lake McDonough Recreational Area and the Farmington River just a stone’s throw away, our guest house is surrounded by nearly 4,000 acres of State forests, with miles of walking trails punctuated with dramatic mountain outlooks all within walking distance of the property.
Air and light permeate the guest house space, which is constructed around the beams of an 18th century barn once situated on the coast of Maine. The guest house features wide floor boards, plastered walls, custom molding, oak paneling preserved from a turn-of-the century estate in Bridgeport Connecticut, and walls of mini-paned leaded glass windows composed of antique glass. Each of the windows frames a picturesque view of the stately property. The guest house inherits the main house’s architectural style and aesthetic; clean, simple, open, friendly. The kitchen is the focal point of the studio. It boasts unique hand-crafted cabinetry, granite countertops, accent lighting, and top of the line appliances. The large dining table was hewn from local timber. This is not a Bed & Breakfast, and thus there is no predetermined meal schedule to adhere to. Food-loving cook guests are free to use the kitchen to prepare their own repast at their leisure. In season, guests may pick salad from our vegetable garden, and apples and peaches from our small orchard. The master bedroom with its cathedral ceiling gives a sense of spaciousness. It features a full-sized antique brass bed and a primitive iron twin-sized bed. A day bed adorns the sitting area. The bedroom exudes comfort and warmth. The exquisitely tiled bathroom features a claw-foot tub and a pedestal sink from a bygone era. Guests can behold a breathtaking view of the pine forests while enjoying a relaxing bath in the tub.
Guests with an appreciation of nature and the environment will particularly find our place worthy of a stay with us. The area is renowned for its hiking, bicycling, fly fishing for trout and kayaking on the Farmington River that flows nearby, and kayaking/canoeing/swimming on Lake McDonough. Olga and John can point you to the most scenic and exhilarating outlooks and most adventurous hiking trails, and John might be convinced to guide you to some of his favorite stretches of trout waters on the Farmington. For ski enthusiasts (like us), Ski Sundown is only 12 minutes away by car. Whether you are an advanced, intermediate or beginner skier or snowboarder, Ski Sundown has terrain to suit your needs. Set in a beautiful mountain setting, the resort boasts 100% snowmaking on every trail, with excellent grooming and reliable conditions. Ski Sundown offers day and night skiing. The Snowsports School at Ski Sundown is made up of over 200 dedicated staff members whose mission is to share their love of skiing with you and your family, and its cadre of professional ski instructors will meet the need of any level of skier through a number of lesson packages.
Whatever the season, our guest house will offer you a warm welcome and a peaceful stay of quiet enjoyment. We love our charming country estate, and would love to share it with discerning travelers.

After a lifetime abroad in countless countries worldwide, Olga and I have at last returned to the U.S. to settle with our three young children in idyllic Northwestern Connecticut. We're enjoying a peaceful life here, with most of our time spent raising the children and teaching them about the wonders and care of the natural environment that surrounds us. Olga and I spend much of our time taking care of the grounds, including gardening (Olga the flower gardens, me the vegetable garden and orchards). Olga still finds time for a daily run on country roads that wind through here, and I to trout fish on the Farmington River. Olga is a fabulous cook and loves to bake, which she does every day.
