One of the rare units with amazing views of Cooper Avenue Outdoor Pedestrian Mall and Red Mountain. Great for people watching.
Based on my personal research, this beautiful Victorian Commercial historic building was built in 1889, the same year as the Jerome Hotel and Wheeler Opera house in Aspen at the height of prosperity and growth during the silver mining days. It has served the Aspen community in so many different capacities over the last 128 years, including the town post office from 1910 to 1924; amazingly, its identity continues to evolve through to the present.
In 1982, the interior of the building was completely rebuilt and re-styled to resemble much of what it is today. At that time it was divided into 28 small hotel type rooms on two floors and retrofitted with vertical steel beams to support the new interior construction, eliminating the interior stairwell and large lobby space you would see in a place like the Brown Palace in Denver. In fact, the restroom in this unit is from 1982 in all its 80's glory. Today, there are about 20-26 units as some units have been combined or others have plans to combine units to make for more spacious guest quarters or private residences. The interior common spaces have been given an updated modern rustic decor within the last three months, replacing the worst of the 80's maroon and green decor with chic paint choices and vintage furnishings.
What helps make this location magical is that it happens to be situated directly upon the pulse line of our beautiful resort town. When it was built, the pulse of our city was Main street, and our little building known today as the Independence Building was a bit removed from the main drag. In 1977, the city of St. Louis gifted us hundreds of thousands of bricks from their streets which were laid in 1901, which our town utilized to pave what is today our pedestrian outdoor mall of Hyman and Cooper Avenue. Dirt roads with horse carriages became brick walkways and paved streets with fancy people and fancy cars. The brick walkways look and feel as if they have been there since the beginning of time. For those of us who have been to the cities of Stockholm and Florence and Rome and other cities with cobblestone like streets, this helps to transport us to another time. And us ladies have to be masterful when donning our stilettos on a night out on the town. When Aspen Ski Co came along and installed the Silver Queen Gondola, (a 1/2 block away), suddenly our little building found itself to be in the best location in town--fifty steps in any direction allows for unparalleled access to world-class cuisine, shopping, and skiing or hiking.
Also, there is a term in Aspen called the "Aspen Core" which is comprised of about a 1/4 square mile of contiguous real estate in which the pied-a-terre lifestyle is in full effect. In this small amount of square footage is packed the very best that Aspen has to offer including views, downtown penthouses, excellent shopping, impeccable restaurants and mixed-use commercial and residential living. If you lose your luggage, no worries, Ralph Lauren is in the same building on the first floor. If you're in a rush, just take the fire escape.
The most breath-taking surprise of the building is the little-known rooftop deck which has an incredible 360 degree panoramic view of the entire town and surround natural beauty of the mountains. There is no better place than to stargaze, watch the sunset or the fireworks and breathe in the crisp mountain air at 8000 ft elevation.
As a re-developer and someone who is obsessed with making beautiful spaces in the most unique and rare locations, these units will soon undergo a major renovation and be made into a private residence and may not be as available in the future.
If you do stay with us, we warmly welcome you and sincerely hope you enjoy all that this place has to offer.
