Thanks for your review Melissa - it is most appreciated and we hope you will visit us again to partake in the beauty and charm of Clarens.
Yes the quirky stairs - What can we say about those!!! The stairs can be tricky for both young and old and at times we are surprised by the comments of our guests. Recent guests in their late 70's found the stairs to be "a charming part of the house that added to the overall character".
Indeed the stairs have presented us with challenges as well - Beds and furniture needed to be hoisted over the balcony or through windows to get them to the upper level bedrooms as they are unable to be carried up the narrow stairs. Unfortunately, we are prohibited from major alterations to the structure of the building, including making a new stairway or entrance for the cottage due to its heritage status.
When listing the cottage, we purposely included photos showing various angles of the stairs, whilst our general wording stipulates that there are stairs. Guests are further cautioned under our house rules which stipulate that the cottage is not suitable to little ones less than 4 years of age, the elderly or those who battle with stairs. Luckily the downstairs loo does help alleviate the necessity of climbing the stairs frequently but indeed the stairs are either a thorn in ones side or a charming quirk to our guests!!!
We hope that the spectacular views from the balcony and bedrooms make the stairs worth the effort!!!!
