Elhelyezkedés

Highland, Skócia, Egyesült Királyság

Having owned the farm as our second home since 1992 we have excellent knowledge of the many local things to enjoy for all ages.

Golf courses are situated at Wick, Thurso, Dounreay and Lybster.

Course and game fishing takes place at Loch Watten.
Various horse riding centres in the area.

John O' Groats-

A mere 17 miles away from Wathegar. Take the obligatory photo next to the end of the isles sign at the UK's most northerly point. In late spring/summer spot the rare Atlantic puffins on the cliffs of Dunnet Head the RSPB'S largest reserve.

Take the ferry to Orkney (40 mins), or go on a 90 minute wildlife boat tour - no booking necessary. Expect to see grey seals and if you're lucky Orca (Killer) Whales that have been spotted off the Caithness Coast. And in the Winter, go to spot the northern lights.

The Orkney Islands-

16 kilometres off the coast of Caithness. Like nowhere else. The perfect day trip from John O' Groats. A groupof 70 islands with only 12 inhabited. Visit the largest island 'Mainland' and the astonishing iron age houses at Scara Brae, St Magnus Cathedral at Kirkwall , the Churchill Barriers , Scapa Flow , the Italian Chapel and the groups of ancient standing stones.
Near our farm:
Situated just south of our farm between Lybster and Watten are the 5000 year old Camster Cairns.
A little further down the coast are the steep Whaligoe steps leading down to the harbour where the fishing fleets landed their catch when it was not possible to get into Wick harbour.
In Wick itself there is an excellent Heritage museum.
Go to "Wickers' World" down by the harbour for lunch.

Thurso-

The most northern town on the British mainland. A 20 minute journey. On the coast overlooking the Orkney Islands, Thurso boasts a dramatic beach that attracts surfers from all over the world. Catch the ferry from Scrabster to the Orkney Islands. Also it's here where you'll find the UK's most northernly cinema and bowling alley.

Wick-

The farm is 4.5 miles away from harbour town Wick where there is an airport (flights from Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Wick boasts the Caithness heritage centre, the Old Poultney Whiskey Distillery, and the world's shortest street! Wick also has a swimming pool and sports facilities.
Go to "Wickers World" by the harbour for lunch.

The Castle of Mey -
The Queen Mother's favourite bolthole, owned by the late Queen Mother now open to the public with an animal farm, gardens and the annual traditional highland games- expect caber tossing and tug-o-war on August 5th hosted by a Royal. Last year saw Prince Charles hosting the event.

Pony Trekking
Please ask Lisa to recommend the best local stables for a highland pony trek.

Beaches -

Caithness's beaches are some of the most dramatic and cleanest in the UK we recommend Keiss beach and Dunnet Head.

Bring your wellies! You will be spoilt for choice for walks. Even if you don't want to leave the farmland there's plenty to explore, the old ruins of the barns and outbuildings.

Keen birdwatchers can expect to see birds of prey such as buzzards , kestrels, sparrowhawks , barn owls and occasionally hen harriers.

Together with usual farmland birds such as curlews , oystercatchers and yellowhammers, with large visiting flocks of geese and golden plovers at certain times of the year.

In Spring the cuckoos arrive.

Myself and my husband Paul own Paul Haley's Scottish Christmas Trees established 1980. We have been growing trees in Caithness since 1992 on the farmland at Wathegar. We love the away from it all experience and the wildlife that Wathegar offers and have a tried and tested knowledge of all that there is to enjoy in the area, from years of family holidays and trips with friends. We're sure you'll love it too! We have hosted several families over the years through other sites and have found Wathegar to be popular. We'd now like to welcome AirBNB guests also. We have all ages staying at the farm from babies to 95 yr olds enjoying our lovely second home.
