Welcome to the new Tranquility Retreat! If you’ve stayed with Eric and Rob before, you know we only offer amazing well cared-for homes, in the best locations, extremely well appointed, and with great communication from your hosts. We love our properties, we love our guests, and we want you to have an amazing stay with us. We are very excited to add to our portfolio this gorgeous home, in the perfect location if you’re visiting Saugatuck/Douglas.
So why am I so excited about Tranquility Retreat? You get it ALL! I’ve driven to Tranquility 100 times, and every time I make the left turn onto Lakeshore Drive my adrenaline begins to rise, my mood relaxes, I slow down my speed to take in the views of both the homes and the coastline, and I have a smile on my face. You know as you turn off Lakeshore Drive and onto wooded Tranquility Lane you’re on the route to a great place! This property is just a couple of houses in from Lake Michigan off Lakeshore Drive. If you’re not familiar with Lakeshore Drive, it sits high above the Lake Michigan shoreline, and is where you’ll find the most sought after homes in Saugatuck/Douglas. The home is situated on a heavily wooded full acre lot, so you’ll get plenty of peace and quiet, and will definitely get to enjoy a more country getaway experience. Nested in nature, you’re just a short walk away from the upper cliffs along Lake Michigan, and still super-close to both beaches and downtown Saugatuck & Douglas. So whether you’re coming for a nature retreat, walks with great views, the beach or shopping/eating downtown, this is an amazing location to get it all!
Our most common question is about the home’s proximity to the beach and downtown. Douglas Beach is along Lakeshore Drive, and while it has limited parking, this free cliff-style beach accessible by stairs is only 1.2 miles from the home. It’s a nice walk straight down beautiful Lakeshore Drive – amazing views of Lake Michigan and its beautiful sunsets will be on your left, and some really amazing homes on your right. But if you’re coming here for the beach, you probably want to check out award winning Oval Beach. So, if Oval is your destination, it really doesn’t matter where you stay in town, as long as you pick a property between the two main exits for Saugatuck/Douglas (exits 36 & 41). With the town being so small, the driving time to Oval Beach will be roughly the same for every vacation rental in town, give or take a few minutes. I say this because there is a long stretch of winding/wooded country drive approaching Oval Beach that is really not designed for pedestrians, and with this area being so small, no property really has a big “beach” advantage in the context of Oval Beach since you really need to arrive there on some wheels. It’s a gorgeous beach, but plan to drive or take the “Interurban Oval Beach Shuttle” from town if you are going.
As for exact distances…
- Douglas Beach is 1.2 miles from this home
- Oval Beach is 3.6 miles from this home
- Oval Beach is 3.2 miles from downtown Saugatuck
- Downtown Saugatuck is 3.4 miles from this home
- Exit 36 off of Highway 196 is 2.3 miles from this home (primary highway access)
Now that we know the home is in an amazing location, let’s talk about the space...
This home has a great open floor plan – the kitchen, kitchen island/sitting area, dining room, and living room all flow from one to the next with plenty of windows looking out to the woods on the back of the property. A natural gas fireplace with stone cladding and a wood mantel sits at the head of the living room, reaching up to the vaulted ceiling with skylights. The open space also features stunning large timber pillars and support beams.
If the peace and quiet of the location isn’t enough, you’ll enjoy a blissful night’s sleep and wake up refreshed on our top of the line beds – all of the bedrooms in this home have Sterns and Foster Mattresses, 900+ thread count sateen sheets, feather pillows and feather down duvets. If you’re traveling with anyone that might prefer to avoid a second floor sleeping space, you’ll be happy to find out, the master bedroom is on the first floor. Here is an overview of the sleeping spaces and bathrooms:
First Floor (sleeps 5 and has 1.5 baths)
- Bedroom 1 (Master) - King
- Living Room – Queen Sleeper Sofa
- Living Room – Twin Sleeper Love Seat
- Master Bathroom – Tub/Shower Combo, Toilet & Sink
- Half Bathroom – Toilet Sink Only
Second Floor (sleeps 6 and has 1 full bath)
- Bedroom 2 – Queen bed
- Bedroom 3 – Two double beds
- Bathroom – Separate Shower, Oversized Jetted Tub for 2 people, Toilet & Sink
In the bathrooms, you will find plenty of amenities including hand soap pumps, shower pumps dispensing shampoo, conditioner & body wash, and a full amenity tray. We stock plenty of plush bath towels, and you’ll even find bathrobes in bedroom closets for use during your stay.
We cook… a lot! So we couldn’t imagine offering you a poorly stocked kitchen…. This large kitchen with eat-in island has tons of cabinets and counter space… and lucky for you, we’ve already got the cabinets stocked with all the utensils and small appliances you’ll need to make and serve a full meal. Our most common questions regarding the kitchen are about coffee makers and toasters. The toaster is a 4-slice, and the coffee maker uses coffee grounds and has a wire mesh reusable filter. If you’re hoping to have everyone sit down at a table for a meal, the large dining room table seats 8, and the adjacent kitchen island seats 4, while still leaving plenty of room for serving space. As for appliances- everything is stainless steel and includes a double basin sink with a commercial style spring design faucet, top panel 3-rack dishwasher with heated dry, 5-burner gas range, over the range built-in microwave, and of course a 36” French Door refrigerator with filtered ice and water on the door.
This home also offers what people around here call a 3-season room. It’s pretty much a porch with lots of large windows that isn’t temperature controlled. You get all the benefits of a screened in porch, but during inclement weather, or as temperatures start to drop, you can close up windows to keep the space more comfortable. In the winter, it’s a great place to take off and store your snowy boots, and of course change into your fuzzy slippers (don’t forget to pack them)!
Outside you’ll find a propane gas grill (propane tank included), and fire pit (fire wood not included).
We do not discriminate based on age, race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, disability, national origin or any other reason people have found to discriminate. All are welcome in our home!! We believe in equality for everyone. Our home is a place where all should feel safe and be able to enjoy the beauty of Michigan.
Tranquility Lane is a small drive tucked in the woods accessible only from Lakeshore Drive. For those of you not familiar with Lakeshore Drive, it is a small 2-lane road that runs along the Lake Michigan coastline placed very high up on top of a steep cliff. While you can't get down the steep cliff to the lake in this area, it is home to the most sought after addresses in the Saugatuck/Douglas/Fennvile area because of its amazing views. And the view is amazing on both sides of the road - on one side you can enjoy the gorgeous Lake Michigan shoreline from high above, accompanied by some spectacular sunsets. On the other side of the road you'll see magnificent homes featuring architecture from every decade and style. This beautiful home is accessible from the Douglas highway exit, and is just minutes to downtown Douglas, downtown Saugatuck and both Douglas and Oval beaches. Finding a vacation rental near Lakeshore Drive is rare, and this gem has the benefit of a large gorgeous heavily wooded street among beautiful homes, and is still close to all that Saugatuck/Douglas/Fennville has to offer.
Unsure if you’re looking at the right properties for your visit to Saugatuck/Douglas? Let us help…. so, if you’re looking to visit Saugatuck/Douglas, zoom in on google maps near highway 196, exit 36 (Douglas exit just south of Saugatuck Brewing Company) If you look along the Michigan coastline, you’ll see a street called Lakeshore Drive. Notice as you follow it south, it dead ends… cuts off… for us, that’s the “end of the world”. Ideally you want to be north of this cutoff when you make your vacation rental selection if you’re visiting Saugatuck/Douglas. No matter what city your map program thinks you’re in, if you’re north of this break in Lakeshore Drive, you’re in Saugatuck or Douglas. This is right near the border of Fennville, and with many of these being private drives, the map programs don’t have all of these addresses correct. On the North side, you can follow 196 on the map up to the next exit (exit 41 – Saugatuck exit near Burger King), and feel comfortable selecting properties anywhere along the way. On the east side, I’d probably try to stay West of 63rd St, and definitely west of 58th St. This is a really small area, so one good thing about staying closer to far edges of this area I described is that you likely will get a more secluded and relaxing experience in your vacation rental, while still being super-close to downtown/restaurants/beaches/etc..
