The Cotswolds are characterised by attractive small towns and villages, built of the underlying Cotswold stone (a yellow oolitic limestone). In the Middle Ages the wool trade made the Cotswolds prosperous and some of this money was put into the building of churches, leaving the area with a number of large handsome Cotswold stone "wool churches". The area remains affluent, which has encouraged the establishment of many high quality pubs, restaurants and antique shops.

Welcome to The Sanctuary, brought to you exclusively by Character Cottages, local specialists in stylish, Cotswold holiday rentals. The Sanctuary forms part of a converted church with an enviable position just moments from the market square in the picturesque market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. Sitting on top a hill, surrounded by the stunning Cotswold countryside, Stow is famous for its historic buildings and its wide range of restaurants, traditional pubs and antique shops. It is an ideal base for exploring the region, including the many lovely towns and villages of the Cotswolds, as well as further afield places such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and Bath. Important Customer Notice: - Special Events: Christmas, New Year and the Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival are Special Events, with bookings typically limited to weeks only from a specific start day If your dates don’t appear to fit, then please click Contact Host below to find out what options may exist for you!
The main door of the building opens into a communal lobby and The Sanctuary’s front door opens into a hallway, off which are the following rooms, all with underfloor heating: Living/dining room/kitchen: This smart open plan living space has been finished to a high standard with wooden floors and a high west-facing window which floods the living area with natural light. There is a sofa bed, a Smart TV with access to Netflix and a DVD player. An extendable wooden table with seating for four divides the living area and kitchen, and the latter has Shaker-style units and is equipped with an electric oven, four-ring induction hob, fridge, toaster, kettle, cafetière, water filter and dishwasher; Cloakroom: Contains a toilet and wash basin. Stairs lead up from the hallway into the master bedroom. The following rooms are on the first floor, both with underfloor heating: Master bedroom: This unique room has a stunning church window and a glass balcony overlooking the living area below. Located in the north Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold is one of the principal market towns in the region. The main feature of the town is the historic market square which used to play host to the annual sheep fairs where, at the height of the Cotswold wool industry, up to 20,000 sheep were sold at one time. The market square is steeped in history and has two features which date back to the medieval period. At one end of the square there is the medieval cross which was erected to urge traders to carry out fair business under the eyes of God, and at the far end stand the town stocks which are found in the shadows of the old elm tree. Originally known as Edwardstow or Stow St Edward after the town's patron saint Edward, the town's church is also named after him. The church is just 100 yards from the town square and is a lovely place for locals and tourists alike to get some peace from the bustling market square. The north door is guarded by two yew trees and is a focal point of the town. Stow has traditional narrow alleyways, or "tures" as they were once known, which wind their way through the centre of the town. It is these same alleyways that were once used to channel the sheep to the fair. Another point of interest in the town is the well in Well Lane which is now a Grade II Listed Building. As a result of the rather unique geology of the area, water held in the higher layers of the limestone bursts out of various fissures on the slopes and two do still work as wells now. Food & Drink Stow has numerous places to eat and drink, with a range of cuisines and prices to suit all tastes and budgets. The list below is a small sample of the range of options available: The Queens Head Inn (www.donnington-brewery.com/the_queens_head_stow_on_the_wold): The Queens Head is a traditional town pub, owned by the local Donnington brewery. Here locals mix with tourists who are unsurprisingly attracted into this lovely old pub. Good traditional pub food and ale, in a great atmosphere; The Sheep (www.thesheepstow.co.uk): A seasonal menu with pizzas being a major focus. There is a wood-fired oven in the restaurant, where you can watch your freshly made pizza cook; The Talbot: Laid back drinking, eating and coffees in a traditional meeting place for the town slap bang in the Square. Sofas, original paintings, rickety old tables and chairs, with staff who are under the threat of death if they are not friendly! White Hart (www.thewhitehartstow.com): A 'boutique' style Inn, which has recently been beautifully refurbished throughout. The Inn boasts two cosy bars, lots of open fires and an atmospheric dining room. Hearty food is served during the day, with finer dining in the evening. All food is sourced locally and prepared on the premises; The Bell (www.thebellatstow.com): The Bell at Stow is the perfect country pub. Behind the ivy-clad façade lies a charming, stylish interior with the warmest of welcomes. A favourite with the locals, The Bell is open all day every day offering everything from a pint of well-kept cask ale through to a delicious three-course supper. Stow has a Tesco and a Co-op for regular food purchases and, for special treats, there is a traditional butcher's shop and a number of delicatessens specialising in local produce, including: Lambournes Butchers (www.lambournesbutchers.co.uk): A family owned, multi-award winning traditional butchers, renowned for locally-produced meat, poultry and game, sourced from hand-picked suppliers. Referring to the owner, the BBC's Adam Henson has observed that "what Bob doesn't know about sausages isn't worth knowing"; Cotswold Food Store and Café (www.cotswoldfoodstore.co.uk): The Cotswold Food Store and Café offers a huge variety of delicious local foods, ranging from locally sourced vegetables, meat, eggs and bread to charcuterie, hams and pates in its deli counter. The adjoining café offers freshly prepared meals by resident chef Sonya Kidney, along with home-made cakes, biscuits and light bites; Hamptons Fine Foods (www.hamptons-hampers.co.uk): Hamptons offer a wide range of quality foods to discerning customers. The shelves are packed with exclusive and delicious fine foods that one would not normally find in the mass outlets. A veritable Aladdin's cave. Hamptons specialise in gourmet hampers which can be collected from their shop or delivered direct.

Welcome to Cotswold View, brought to you exclusively by Character Cottages, local specialists in stylish, Cotswold holiday rentals. Cotswold View is a stunning contemporary property, on the ground floor of a new eco-friendly Cotswold stone farmhouse, which sits on a small farm with spectacular south easterly views across the beautiful Windrush Valley. As well as the lovely countryside views, a wide variety of wildlife can often be seen from the property, and yet the farm is located only half a mile up a country lane from the famous Cotswolds village of Bourton-on-the-Water. Affectionately known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds", due to the lovely river that meanders through the centre of the village, Bourton is surrounded by stunning countryside, with numerous walks on the doorstep, and a central location that makes it ideal for exploring the entire Cotswolds region and beyond. Important Customer Notice: - Special Events: Christmas, New Year and the Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival are Special Events, with bookings typically limited to weeks only from a specific start day If your dates don’t appear to fit, then please click Contact Host below to find out what options may exist for you!
Cotswold View is accessed through the farmyard, and once you reach the front door, the only thing you look out over are miles of unbroken countryside. The front door opens into the main open-plan living space of the property, with all the rooms on the same ground floor level: •Living room/kitchen/dining area: This bright and spacious open plan space has floor to ceiling windows, which offer spectacular views across the Windrush Valley. The living room area contains plenty of seating with two comfy sofas and a side chair, a very realistic wood free electric log stove, and a flatscreen TV, with a Blu-ray player. One of the sofas opens up to form a single sofa bed for children under 10, if required. The large kitchen area is well equipped, with an electric oven, four ring induction hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, washing machine and tumble dryer. The dining area contains a table, with seating for five; •Master bedroom: Further floor to ceiling windows provide lovely views across the Windrush Valley. The bedroom can be set up as either a super king size bed, or two single beds; •Bedroom 2: Located at the rear of the property, this room contains a double bed. There is no window in the bedroom, however the door and the wall separating the room from the main living area are glazed, to allow natural light in, with a curtain for privacy; •Family bathroom: The property layout means the bathroom can either be an ensuite or a family bathroom. It contains a bath, walk-in shower, toilet and wash basin. Immediately outside the front door is a patio area, with a table and four chairs, which is perfect for whiling away time and watching the wide array of wildlife that regularly visits the farm. The open grounds of the farm wrap around the house and extend down a grassy hill to the enclosed paddocks beyond. There is a charcoal barbecue at the property and ample off street parking is available next to the farmhouse.
Bourton-on-the-Water is arguably one of the most popular villages of the Cotswolds, especially amongst overseas visitors. Having been nicknamed the "Venice of the Cotswolds", its scenery is the main draw for travellers. The River Windrush meanders through beautiful English countryside before passing over rapids next to the Old Mill and arriving at Bourton. The river is fed from many springs, with the source approximately ten miles from the village and, after flowing under the bridges of Bourton, it passes other villages before eventually joining the Thames. There are various attractions in the village, including the famous Birdland, which is home to a variety of birds from around the world. Here visitors can see parrots, pelicans, flamingos and penguins to name just a few, with experienced keepers feeding the birds and leading demonstrations. The Model Village is well worth a visit, as Bourton is the only village in the Cotswolds to have a one-ninth scale replica of itself. It is carefully maintained and has all of the characterful buildings including the Old Water Mill and the Old New Inn. Those lucky enough to witness snow in the winter months will notice photographers at the model village trying to get the perfect picture of the snowy scene.

Cirencester is more than just a picturesque cotswold town, it is a place steeped in history. In Roman times Cirencester was the second largest town after London with a population of around twenty thousand people, not far off the number today. This flat is well situated for business travellers being within walking distance of St James Place and the Mitsubishi head office. For the the off-duty traveller there is a lot to see and do In Cirencester, there is a very good museum telling the history of the town over the last 2000 years, there is the ten thousand acre Bathurst Estate park for walkers (restrictions apply for dogs) and probably the most beautiful Polo grounds in the country. The hedge around the Manor house is reputed to be the largest Yew hedge in Europe. The church of St John the Baptist is supposed to be the largest Parish church in England and is very impressive. There are three parks, lots of restaurants, coffee shops, boutique clothing shops, art galleries and there are very good plays, shows, comedy and other entertainments at the theatres. The Cotswold Water park is only ten minutes by car and has great walks, cycle paths and food and drink as well as paddle boarding, sailing, wake boarding and other water sports. There are many regional activities to see if you time your visit right. Duck racing at South Cerney, Cheese Rolling at Coopers Hill, Polo matches, Wool Sack races, music festivals including Cirencesters own Phoenix festival, steam rallies and Fairford international air tattoo which might be the best air show in the world. Nearby there are a lot of wonderful Cotswold towns and villages, really good walks, country pubs and castles at Berkeley, Winchcomb and Warwick. There is also the Cotswold Wildlife Park and the Crocodiles of the World not too far away. Have a look at the Getting Around section on this page for travelling times to some of the local attractions and services.

Cirencester – or for locals simply Ciren - lies on the River Churn, a tributary of the Thames, and is the largest town in Cotswolds. In Roman times, there was a thriving wool industry, and roman ruins can still be visited. When a wall was erected in the 2nd century Corinium was, in area, the second-largest city in Britain. A great abbey church was dedicated in 1176 but in the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, Henry VIII ordered its total demolition. Today only the Norman Arch and parts of the precinct wall remain above ground, forming the perimeter of the Abbey Fields. The tombs of medieval merchants can be seen in the magnificent parish church, while their fine houses are still standing around the town. Ciren lies close to the heart of the scenic Cotswold region with major attractions like Stow, Chipping Camden and Burford and bigger destinations like Bath and Cheltenham all within about 40 minutes drive. Only slightly farther afield are Shakespeare's Stratford, Stonehenge, Blenheim Palace and the dreaming spires of Oxford. Asphodel is a perfect base to relax or explore. But you don't always need 'destinations'. One of the delights of the Cotswolds is touring the picturesque country lanes and discovering picture postcard villages where the tourist buses never venture. Relax in the garden of the village cafe or by the fire in the historic pub. All our local recommendations and secrets are revealed in your cottage welcome guide.

Free on-street parking is available just a short walk away from the property.
