The Bean coffee shop is where you'll find the locals, most any morning. The conversation surrounds the many sail and shrimp boats in the harbor, and there may be a fitting critique of someone learning how to dock. A community art space is next door, The Village Gallery, filled with the work of many talented artists. We're particularly fond of Shelley's pottery, which you can also find on Instagram under "bearhandsart." It's the perfect spot for a morning jog. The hardware store up the road has the heartiest stock. And the deli across the street of it is reported to be the best egg sandwiches around (we don't yet know because we go to The Bean). A perfect half to full day exploration from our accommodations at The Loft above Downton Antiques in Beaufort, NC.

Breathe deeply. Forget the electronics. Move your arms and body and feel yourself propel across the Channel to the Reserve, where you will be surrounded by nature and wildlife. Even a half-day kayak trip will release any tensions. You can rent kayaks locally, and there are also guided tour operators.

Mixes a mean everything, including the perfect decaf latte. From there, go to the Emerald Isle beach, the tip of a 15-mile, uninterrupted beach, that is clean and teaming with wildlife.

Why would we give away this secret? Best sea shelling in the area is the beach at Fort Macon State Park. Free admission, free parking, a museum/gift shop/clean rest rooms. It's a fort on the penninsula; channel on one side, ocean on the other. Channel side much calmer than the ocean side - so do be aware of this. Tip: go at low tide. Simply Google "low tide Fort Macon NC" and it will tell you the strategic time. Head over to arrive one hour ahead of low tide. Bring a bucket and shelling net, which you can find at the Beaufort General Store on Front Street. Pack water, snacks, and sunscreen. Beach exceptionally clean. Suitable for children. No lifeguards or other markings. We do get sharks along this part of the coast, so do be aware of that, as well. Our favorite spot to quickly get out into nature. Approximately 15-20 easy drive from The Loft above Downton Antiques.

Carteret Writers
Carteret Writers is a rare gem of the literary community known as North Carolina. There's a reason NC is nicknamed "the writingest state." Writers. Everywhere! Here on the coast, Carteret Writers serves members from New Bern to Jacksonville, often meeting in Beaufort. The meetings are open to the public, and often include guest speakers, published authors, editors, and the occasional open mic. "Shoal" is its annual publication, and you can find copies of it at "Downton Antiques" in Beaufort, NC. Paloma is on the Board of Directors, so don't hesitate to ask!
