Parks & Nature

Matka lake and Canyon are real rarity of the nature
The larger lake is 35 metres (114.8 feet) at its longest length, and 18 metres (59 feet) at its deepest point. Though the exact depth of the cave is unknown, some speculate that it could be the deepest underwater cave in the world. The cave can only be reached by water either by a boat or kayak. The most adventurous way to see the canyon from the water is in a kayak. You can rent them by the hour. There are single and double ones. Peddling on the lake was pretty easy, there is basically no current. Best thing to do is to take a boat trip to enjoy this beautiful place from the water. Boat trips are about 30 minutes and cost 200 Denar per person (€3,30). There are two places where you can take a boat trip. The first one you will walk up to is not so busy as the second one. I took a boat trip with the guys closest to the dam and the entrance of Matka Canyon and basically enjoyed a private trip.

Matka - A gorge in which a rich complex of medieval building survives, including churches, monasteries and remnants of a fortress (the medieval town of Matka). There are dozens of caves and large number of endemic plants and animals. The Canyon covers an area of around 5.000ha and is located 15km south-west of Skopje. By its morphogenetic characteristic, it is a breakthrough gorge. Krastic form deserve particular attention here-ten caves with their length ranging between 20 and 176 meters and two vertical chasms with a depth up to 35 meters. Matka was one of the largest refugee centers during the glacial period resulting in the presence of high number of relic and endemic plants, 20% are endemic or relic spices. Among Tertary relics, the most significant are the kosani violet and natay's Ramonda (Ramonda natalie). It is also important to mention that there are 77 species of Balkan endemic small butterflies in area of Matka Canyon, while 18 other species are new to the science.

Sightseeing

The Millennium Cross on Vodno Mountain’s highest point is one of the first sights you’ll notice from most everywhere in Macedonia’s capital city, Skopje. At 1,066 meters (3,497 feet) the views from the base of the Millennium Cross are impressive, although finding out how to get there isn’t exactly clear. Fortunately, that’s the most difficult part; once you have the directions visiting the Millennium Cross is pretty easy. Get To The Bus Station Next To The Bus Station You’re likely to be told about the “Millennium Cross” bus line and all the stops it makes throughout Skopje. But it doesn’t, so don’t wait around at bus stop 11 as I did only to find out the route is essentially unpredictable. Skopje is small enough that from most points in the city, like Macedonia Square, you can walk to the International Bus Station within 30 minutes. (It’s roughly 2 kilometers, 1.2 miles, away.) Next to the International Bus Station is a large parking lot you can call the national bus station. Cable car cost is 120 denar, about 2 euro, for a round-trip. One way tickets are available as well, many bikers take the lift up, then cycle back down.

The Fortress Kale is located on the eponymous hill, in the very center of Skopje, on the left bank of the river Vardar and partly in the western part of the bazaar. According to the information so far, the area on which today's fortress is located was inhabited since the prehistoric times, i.e. sometime around IV to III millennium BC. The fortress was again inhabited sometime around the 7th to 6th century BC. This settlement was protected by walls and existed sometime until the IV or III century BC.

As the eighth-largest city in Macedonia and largest city along Lake Ohrid, Ohrid is one of the most-visited places in the country and often regarded as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans,” for its many churches (365 in total). Things to do in Ohrid include visiting the most famous of these churches, as well as enjoying the lakefront and seeing several ancient ruins, medieval monuments, and Ottoman constructions in the vicinity. It would be a shame to travel all the way to Ohrid and not experience the lake by boat. Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s oldest and largest lakes – about 2-5 million years old with an area of about 138 square miles! Near the Center of Ohrid is the Ancient Theatre – an open-air Hellenistic-style theatre that was built around 200 B.C. with a capacity of 4,000 spectators. During Roman times it was used for gladiatorial battles for executing Christians, leading to its abandonment after the fall of the Roman Empire. things_to_do_lake_Orhid_Macedonia_Balkans_Europe_Davidsbeenhere3 It was eventually unearthed and used for public shows. Most notably, it is used as a stage during the annual Ohrid Summer Festival. Admission to the theatre is free. One of the unique things to do in Ohrid is to check out the famous Lake Ohrid pearls at a local workshop. Ohrid pearls are known for their brightness and shine; qualities created by a special emulsion made out of the scales of the local plasica fish, which is a closely guarded secret by the handful of families that have carried on the tradition over the years.
