Neighbourhoods

Winnipeg’s original downtown. The Exchange District is a vibrant thriving neighbourhood in the heart of downtown Winnipeg. This cozy 30 block neighbourhood is home to many restaurants, boutique shops, theatres, art galleries, museums and so much more. Considered a National Historic Site, this architecturally stunning area—established in the early 20th century—was once the centre of business and commerce in Winnipeg. Fast-forward to 2020 and the Exchange District is still buzzing—but the vibe now is decidedly artier. Wander around the 20-block area and you’ll find everything from funky boutiques and antique shops to art galleries and cutting-edge restaurants. At the heart of it all is Old Market Square, a great urban park that comes alive with musical performances and a variety of festivals (including the Winnipeg Fringe) in the summer months. Food Tours and Historic walking Tours available. https://www.exchangedistrict.org/

The Forks, located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years. Indigenous peoples traded at The Forks, followed by European fur traders, Scottish settlers, railway pioneers and tens of thousands of immigrants. Over the last 30 years, the city has transformed this abandoned railyard into The Forks, Winnipeg’s foremost destination, with this set of goals in mind: The Forks shall be developed as a meeting place a special and distinct, all-season gathering and recreational place at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, through a mixed-use approach including recreational, historical and cultural, institutional and supportive commercial uses. Over 4 million visitors come to The Forks each year and more than 1,200 people work on this site. The Forks contributes over $126 million a year to the local economy, and is financially self-sufficient - we do not rely on government funding to operate. The Forks is governed by a board made up of representatives appointed by the civic, provincial and municipal governments. Come experience an exceptional array of dining options, fantastic local makers and retailers, a constantly changing slate of entertainment and events, and many unique attractions that encompass the site’s natural, historic and built features.
