The Zaanse Schans is a small neighborhood in the municipality of Zaanstad. It is one of the most popular outdoor attractions in the Netherlands.
Many of the typical Zaanse houses in the Zaanse Schans come from other parts of the Zaan region. They have been brought together here to give visitors an idea of what most of the villages looked like here in the 18th century. There is also a shipyard, a wooden shoe factory, a bakery museum.

Legend has it that the Volendam coat of arms is a compliment to the beauty of the Volendam girls! No wonder that a famous singer sang the praise of this characteristic Dutch fishing village in the words: "Anyone who wants to see the real beauty of Holland, goes to Volendam". As a result of its completely insulated location, this village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. Don’t forget to visit the Volendam museum with the ’Sigarenbandjeshuis’, where cigar rings are on display.

De Rijp is a beautiful little village in North Holland. The village has a protected cityscape, partly due to the many national monuments.
De Rijp was a prosperous village from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, after which de Rijp loses its direct connection to the sea. This puts an end to herring fishing and whaling in the Rijp. The old center of the village is very well preserved, there are still some of the typical Zaan houses and the old town hall.
