Ah-mazing pizza for being in the middle of the Mojave Desert. We recommend the David Bowie pizza, featuring bacon, onion, and grilled pineapple. During after hike rush hour (6 to 7ish), the place can be packed. Pro tip: call ahead and place your order.

Authentic Western atmosphere. The usual burgers, barbeque, salads and sandwiches. The service is not exactly lightning-quick, but the food is quite good. Especially noteworthy are the ribs and wings. Massive selection of beers on tap. Can get insanely packed in the evening. Note: The Saloon does not allow minors in the evening.

Located inside the Pie For the People complex. It’s a little hidden, so please be patient. The outfit supplies most of the delicious coffee for the entire Joshua Tree region. Service can be quirky, but the coffee is sublime.

No relation to the legendary Frontier in Albuquerque, but equally legendary in this neck of the woods. Take in the lofty setting and order at the counter. Favorites include the baby kale salad, the grilled turkey, cheese and pesto sandwich and the high-octane Americano coffee. Turntable and stereo available for self-DJing sessions.

We presume that this is why you're here. The park is a natural treasure and it has been getting more popular each and every year. Our advice: get there early. The lines to get into the park are growing longer. If you can't get in early, then try to the 29 Palms entrance. Most of the popular hikes are closer to the Joshua Tree entrance but the 29 Palms entrance does offer up the less trodden trails, as well. The most popular "greatest hits" trails include Hidden Valley, Barker Dam, Keys View, Ryan Mountain and Wall Street Mill. If you get inside towards the late afternoon, no worries--a drive around the park taking in the Wonderland of Rock and all the boulder formations is just as rewarding as a hike.

It's just around the corner from Joshua Tree, but it's still about 45 minutes away. If you are in need of the civilization that the low desert has to offer, Palms Springs is sure to satisfy. We recommend taking a tour of the mid-century modern homes and brunch at Cheeky's.
