Bring Sunscreen and Comfortable Flip Flips

As Cambodia is quite warm almost all year round, a good sunscreen is a must bring for any visit to our humble country. Another good thing to bring along is a comfortable pair of flip flops or sandals for ease and comfort.

Say hello like a local

Phnom Penh is a city of friendly locals so be sure to say hello by saying "chum reap suor" (this is the more formal way of saying hello) or you can use the phrase "sua s'dai" which is more colloquially used term. Both phrases translate to "hello" in Khmer, our native language. You can follow this up by asking "nham bai huy nov". This translates to "have you eaten" which is a common saying that the locals use.

Greeting elders or those of higher social standing

Cambodia has a very respectful culture, especially when it comes to greeting elders. So when meeting elders or those of a higher social standing it is important to greet them in the proper way. This is done by placing your palms together to form a gesture we call "Sampeah", slightly bowing your head and saying "Chum Reap Suor". When saying goodbye it is important to form the gesture again and saying "Chum Reap Lear".

Please bring insect repellent

Similarly to Bangkok and other SEA cities, Phnom Penh is very much occupied with monsoon weather all year round. As such insects such as mosquitoes can be quite a pest to any young children that maybe travelling with you. As such it is our recommendation that you bring insect repellent lotions that you can apply on the children to protect them from those pesky insects.
