Behold, the ultimate 'Original' coconut shake that made coconuts boom into stardom. Packed with patrons everyday, the place is rarely not full. But customer turnover is pretty quick so if you opt to dine-in, you'll be able to find a seat in at most ten minutes (or so). For takeaways at the outside booth, however, will set you back at a longer waiting time. You'll see cars parked alongside the booth waiting to get their drinks to-go. Creamy, fragrant and refreshing, a Klebang Coconut Shake will surely wash away all that sorrow (at least for now).

Coconut shake has always been the drink to look for when in Melaka. Now, you have an alternative – mango float which can be found at Sungai Putat in Batu Berendam. The stall that started selling the drink a year ago is called Mango Float Royale Melaka and should be added to your list of places to try while visiting Melaka. The mango float consists of mango juice which had been mixed with a small amount of mango cordial to set the sweetness, and no additional sugar is added. Then a huge scoop of Wall’s vanilla ice cream is added on top followed by real mango cubes. A cup is priced at RM5. The mango float’s presentation is beautiful, impressive even considering it’s from a street vendor.

Melaka Menara Taming Sari (Taming Sari Tower) officially opened for business on the 18th of April 2008, Menara Taming Sari is the first and only gyro tower in Malaysia so far. Measuring 110 metres in height, its revolving structure offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Malacca town and beyond. Located in the popular district of Bandar Hilir on Jalan Merdeka, only 3 minutes’ walk from Mahkota Parade Shopping Complex and Dataran Pahlawan Megamall, the tower is named after the Taming Sari keris, a mythical weapon said to possess mystical powers belonging to the legendary Malay warrior, Hang Tuah. Even the structure’s design follows the shape of the keris.

The Friday and Saturday Jonker Walk Night Market in Malacca City’s Chinatown closes down Jalan Hang Lekir to traffic and when the sun goes down here the handful of bars along the boulevard become a mini street party with tables oozing beyond the sidewalks and a mix of live music coursing throughout the area.

Getting Around

As part of the Unesco Heritage Sites, the ‘Historic Cities of the Straits of Melaka’ needs no introduction. Many Malaysians are repeat visitors to this fascinating site. But today my friends and I decided to explore the area outside of the historic perimeter, to be precise, its coastal area. Over the last couple of years, Klebang Beach (or Pantai Klebang, to the locals), a 15-minute drive out of Melaka City, has become viral because of these two things – food and sand dunes. These were the main reasons we made the two-and-a-half-hour drive to Pantai Klebang all the way from Kuala Lumpur, one fine afternoon.

Drinks & Nightlife

Hard Rock Cafe has finally landed in Malacca, adding yet another live music venue on the bustling streets of Jonker Walk. It sits right by the Malacca River, and at night it is brightly lit and is a spectacular view on its own, giving would-be visitors a taste of how much excitement there is to be had here. Thankfully it doesn’t disappoint– good, quality, live music entertains diners whilst they wait for the generously portioned dishes, and while prices are a little bit on the high side as compared to other nightlife spots, Hard Rock Cafe is a guaranteed rock and rollin’ fun time.

Arts & Culture

While Malay villages are scattered all across the country, few have managed to retain their traditional ways. Kampung Morten (Village Morten), in Malacca, is fortunately one of these, as this quaint village that sits by the riverbanks of Malacca River preserves its authentic surroundings (with colourful wooden houses) and its original day-to-day way of life. Visit the living museum Villa Sentosa for a rare insight of a traditional Malay house and lifestyle, with a family member (Villa Sentosa is an actual house) as a tour guide.
