Rent a car you will not regret it!
Rent a car directly at the airport counter. That is the most cost effective and easy way to get in and out of SJU airport.
A 4x4 is NOT necessary. Unless you plan on going off road.
There are other companies outside of the airport. They seem to cost less. It's rare they do, after they add taxes and fast pass it's all the same. You will also have to wait 20 minutes after your land to get a shuttle to the offsite location and 20 minutes when you return to the airport.

Go food shopping! You can shop @ Super Walmart and get similar items that you have in the main US.
Go food shopping at a local grocery store. They are the same as in the US, just have a combination of local items and regulars items.
