About a five minute drive: 120 Gold Star Blvd; convenient for quick snacks; outside seating. [Glenn likes the egg and bacon sandwich (before 10:30) but not on brioche; instead ask for it on a toasted everything bagel, get it with two over easy eggs and gouda cheese.] Downside: coffee is never very hot. Good soups. Also a place for fresh bread. Known for its wholesome ingredients. Open 6:30 am till 9:30 pm (10 pm Friday and Saturday; 9 pm Sunday) you can eat all day long, but it's convenient for breakfast with several egg/bacon/sausage sandwiches. Open every day of year Christmas and Thanksgiving. Right near Home Depot; Austin Liquors across street. There's another Panera in Shrewsbury if you're going there it's on the way to Trader Joe's, Quinsigamond Plaza stores and Whole Foods.

Well known for its burgers -- most people would say that it has the best burgers in the city (brioche bun and Mac sauce -- it has veggie options too! Fo breakfast, lunch, brunch; open 7 days/week; 8 am - 3 pm; French inspired. Well known for their corned beef hash [Glenn thinks 'meh'] and variations of Eggs Benedict [Glenn thinks 'yes!] with their yummy Hollandaise and lyonnaise potatoes (we're talking exquisitely cooked with butter and onions; if your order it crispy you kind of lose the butter and onions). Lox and bagels are delicious (but -- ugh! -- no everything bagels); Belgian waffles topped with Bananas Foster (!), crepes, beignets, mac and cheese, burgers, braised short ribs, alcoholic brunch drinks (if you like spicy they have it!); take-out and dine-in, bar seating for six. No outside seating; no reservations; be prepared to wait sometimes on weekends (but bar seating often available) OR order from Grubhub. OR if you Google "Altea's Worcester", you'll see that can check the wait time with Google Assistant. Then Google will text you with the wait time. Very cool.

What an amazing place! If you like Middle Eastern food -- labneh, hummus, schwarma -- come here. The food is super fresh, nicely spiced, prepared simply and so tasty. Though it's not apparent they serve alcohol. They have events -- look at their twitter, Instagram or Facebook. The restaurant's decor is quite PLAIN, but don't be deceived: the food is delicious. Excellent food (also via Grub hub). People love their burritos and Chile rellenos; Glenn loves the shrimp quesadillas, queso dip (!) and fajitas . We've never been to restaurant, just ordered delivery. Other excellent Mexican restaurants include Sol of Mexico at 538 Pleasant St (near intersection of Park Ave and Pleasant, 4 miles, 11 mins away). Sol is a hidden gem with a hole-in-the-wall ambience. Worth considering if you're willing to travel 20 mins, 10 miles away: The Brick Mexican Grill, 27 Main St, Sterling, MA 01564. From Reddit: "Small place, all made from scratch. Family owned. Even the bar is all from scratch, no mixes or syrups." Check out the GREAT reviews on Trip Advisor. We've never been here but it's on our bucket list. Closed Sundays. Best for Tacos: The Taco Spot, 264 Grafton St, Worcester, MA 01604, 4 miles, 8 mins away. This is THE place for tacos. Try 'Vampiro' style, which is where cheese is cooked to a crust for the taco. Get the consommé for dipping. Birria tacos offer the welcome option to add peppers. Two options for breakfast tacos: beef or chorizo. Parking limited but you can park in the back by the glass business. The Taco Spot is a few blocks from Mari Monti Italian restaurant. Closed M &W. Otherwise 12-7 pm; call for current hours: +508-713-1476 Also very good: Pepe's Taqueria at 645 Chandler St, 5 miles, 15 mins ( a scenic drive through Beaver Brook neighborhood). 12-9 pm

The three best bakeries per reviews I've read are Birch Tree Bread Company (3.8 miles; 7 mins; Airbnb inexplicably calls this Bircher Common), Wholly Cannoli (490 Grafton Street, 4.5 miles, 10 mins) and Bean Counter Bakery (113 Highland Street, 2.8 miles, 8 mins) Many Birchtree reviews complain of long lines, parking and slow service but people like the food, coffee and liquor. They have a great salmon on toast option that Glenn loves. We like this place a lot! The knock on Wholly Cannoli is though they use great ingredients, much of their stuff is pre-frozen, so not everything is truly fresh. Bean Counter on Highland St is generally well received. To buy fresh bread, Birch Tree is an excellent choice.

Per Boston magazine: "For West African cuisine in Worcester, Accra Girls is where it’s at. For the last few years, the Grafton Street restaurant has offered a delicious “Taste of Ghana” with mouthwatering specialties such as kenkey (fermented corn dough balls) or banku (fermented corn and cassava dumplings) with fish, as well as okra or yam stews, spicy fried plantains, and more. Even better, in 2020 the Accra Girls crew opened a second venture, Akra, at the Worcester Public Market. There, guests choose from rice, veggies, and meats to build their own bowls and wraps." 1280 Grafton Street, about 15 minutes away

Even better, in 2020 the Accra Girls crew opened a second venture, Akra, at the Worcester Public Market. There, guests choose from rice, veggies, and meats to build their own bowls and wraps." 1280 Grafton Street, about 15 minutes away
Per Boston magazine: "Generally recognized as one of New England’s best beer bars, Armsby lives up to the well-earned rep with a draft list that, at any given moment, features regional treasures—even hard-to-find brews from Vermont’s fabled Hill Farmstead—alongside interesting imports and cult-favorite labels. Don’t let the beer goggles cloud your estimation of its also excellent gastropub fare, though, which more than rises to the occasion: Grazing-friendly boards of charcuterie, artisan cheeses, and other small snacks, as well as hearty helpings of stout-braised short rib pot pie, pan-roasted chicken with maple shallot brown butter, and a hell of a double-patty burger topped with marrow caramelized onions." 144 Main St, Worcester, 2.6 miles away; typically 6-12 minutes

Vietnamese hole-in-the wall restaurant; vegan options; near Clark University, local favorite typical rated 4 or somewhat better. Boston magazine says: "Aside from a gurgling fish tank, there’s not much to look at inside Dalat, a spare and frill-free standout for Vietnamese cuisine. Who cares, though? You’re not here for interior decor tips—you’re here to dive face-first into steaming bowls of delicious pho, curry, and fish soups, plates of silky vermicelli noodles with pork or shrimp, and snack on sizzling beef skewers. It’s all offered at excellent prices for the portion, which means there’s one thing you’ll very much enjoy looking at: the bill." 425 Park Ave, 4.7 miles away; typically 10-20 minutes

You have a ton of rooms (40) with different short (~5 mins) challenges ranging from mental to physical. Be sure to read the instructions while waiting to play the room. Weekends involve a wait. Best on weekdays to avoid wait. The 4-hour ticket is not too long (timer starts after purchasing, not when you start playing; so timer runs while you eat/drink). Best for four people or more and kids over 12. [Similar to Boda Borg in Boston] For kids under 12 think nearby Dave & Buster's. From a Yelp review: "There was a room that had a giant labyrinth on the floor (the game where you navigate a ball along a path without dropping it into one of the holes), there are games that require observation skills like finding photos that match a description or watching lights. One of our favorites was the ninja dojo that requires you to tap buttons that light up while you avoid rotating sticks coming off a middle column. " On the food, avoid the wings; sheet pan Nachos and pepperoni pizza good; fries a meh; drinks watered down. Not clean. At Natick Mall, so about 40 mins away. Wear athletic-type clothes; this is a workout.

It's a two and a half hours to get to the start of the 60 mile Driving trip: Mohawk Trail, to Orange, but it's a beautiful rise especially in October leaf peeping, with many attractions along the way. Break up the trip if you go to Springfield first, maybe go to CrabApple Whitewater on way back (summer), trip makes a long loop back to Worcester. Easiest if you plan an overnight along the way.

Because it's long and narrow you get a mixed bag of all kinds of wind conditions. Part of Quinsigamond State park. Plenty of nearby side streets to avoid paying non-resident MA parking fee ($30 - Yikes! But the resident/non-resident status is determined by vehicle license plate). The July 4th fireworks are here.
