Neighborhoods

Grove street is historic Gainesville at it finest. Gainesville's oldest still-standing home, the Bailey House, is right around the corner on Sixth Street. Built in 1854, it was owned by Maj. James Bailey, who helped persuade residents to move the county seat from Newnansville, a town that no longer exists, to Gainesville, then barely a town at all. So, yes, Grove Street is very much old Gainesville. But these days you are just as likely to hear the neighborhood described as "hip," "Bohemian," "happening" and "trendy" as the area is well on its way from transitioning from "old" Gainesville to " hip" Sandwiched between Eighth Avenue on the south, Main Street to the east, 16th Avenue on the north and Sixth Street to the west, Grove Street may also be Gainesville's most walkable neighborhood. It is bisected by the Sixth Street rail-trail, and residents are within easy walking distance of an astonishing array of mostly locally owned businesses and nonprofits. Funky and eclectic one feature you may notice is the stunning array of murals in the area as well as that most of the businesses are small and local owned. As you pass features such as the " Dreamers Garden", attend the local farmers market, or the annual " Grove Street Festival" it is easy to see that this is a community of grassroots efforts where all are welcome.
