The Sheffield Mine in Franklin (about an hour away) is a great place to go gem-mining. Fun for adults and kids! Franklin also has many other gem mining locations, as well as stores, shops, etc.

Silver Run Falls (20-25 minutes away) is a 25' waterfall just south of Cashiers. It's easy to get to and is family friendly. There's a nice swimming hole at the base of the falls for warm days.
