New Clairvaux is also the home of Trappist-Cistercian monks, who have reconstructed a twelfth century Spanish monastery on the property where monks chant the daily Opus Dei or Divine Office.

Lower Sardine Lake is a popular fishing lake and Upper Sardine Lake lies just above Lower Sardine, a 1/2 mile hike up a single lane dirt road along the hillside. It is a stunning swimming spot with the Buttes jutting out of the lake at the far end. Driving from the cottage to these lakes, you'll pass through Downieville, Sierra City, and Bassetts, historic Gold Rush towns. Our personal favorite, but it's an hour + 1/2 from Bluebird Cottage and Oregon Creek is only 25 minutes.

Created by ancient lava flows, the 3,300 acre Table Mountain Ecological Reserve is an elevated basalt mesa with beautiful vistas of spring wildflowers, waterfalls, lava outcrops, and a rare type of vernal pool, called Northern Basalt Flow Vernal Pools.
