City/town information

Alfriston is a charming historical little Village nestled in the heart of the Sussex South Downs. It's mentioned in the Domesday book but theres also strong evidence of ancient occupation in the area - so it's pretty old! It doesnt take long to walk around, so take your time, browse the shops and enjoy the ambience of Village life.

Food scene

There are 3 great pubs in the Village and all are slightly different. The Smugglers Inn is a small but friendly "pubby" pub with nooks and crannies as you head towards the rear of the pub, and an open fire to keep you warm in the winter. The pub was originally called the Market Cross house and was home to one of the East Sussex smuggling gangs. The George Inn is a typical village pub, is a grade 2 listed building and dates back to the 14th century. Inside it has timber beams, an oak floor and a large Inglenook fire with large copper hood. Theres a large beer garden to the rear. The Star Inn is now probably more famous than ever, having been the subject of the recent Channel 5 documentary "My Hotel nightmare" featuring Alex Polizzi (The Hotel Inspector). The Star dates from the 15th century, is also a grade 2 listed building and was called "The Star of Bethlehem" until the 1520's. The Star has been beautifully renovated and is now more a high end establishment so is perfect for special occassions or if you want to treat yourselves. They are all lovely Pubs and seeing as how they are really only a stones throw from each other you can walk around and try them all!

The Rathfinney Wine estate is just 2 miles to the south of Alfriston. Established in 2010 by Mark and Sarah Driver, the Rathfinney estate is focussed on producing fine sparkling wine in the ideal conditions offered by the cooler UK climate and the chalk soil from the South Downs. The Rathfinney Estate offers wine tours and tastings 3 times per day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the summer, and 1 time per day on Saturdays and Sunday during the winter. These need to be booked in advance. The Estate aslo hosts 2 restaurants, one which offers a "fine dining" experience while the other offers more traditional Gastro Pub fare.

Just a 5 minute drive, or an easy 30 minute walk alongside the Cuckmere river, lies the Plough and Harrow pub. The Plough and Harrow offers great food and wine as well as at least 6 real ales at any one time, including some from the local Long Man Brewery. There's also a beer garden to the rear of the pub for summer use.

The Sussex Ox is a fine "Gastro Pub" a short 5 minute drive or 30 minute walk from Alfriston. It's in an especially convenient location to drop into if you are walking to/from the Long Man of Wilmington. The Sussex Ox sources much of its produce from its own farm/gardens, has an excellent wine list and also serves real ales from the local Long Man and Burning Sky breweries.

Every summer from May to August the Glyndebourne Summer Festival is hosted here. Many festival goers enjoy dressing up for the day, and there's the opportunity to take a picnic in the gardens during the interval - weather permitting of course!
