This is, hands down, our kids’ favorite spot. We always sit in the pub, though there is an outside space for warmer days. They have very good and reasonably priced pub food.

This is my favorite place to eat in The Valley. It’s beautifully sited on the edge of Black Mountain Ski Area and has a really wonderful vibe. They have all the pub favorites, as well as a kids’ menu, but also some more elevated choices. They do sometimes close for weddings, so be sure to call before you go.

You have to eat breakfast here. Really! It is so delicious and fresh and I am hungry just thinking about their blueberry pancakes. They are also open for lunch, but breakfast is not to be missed.

This is a great spot in downtown Jackson. We like to eat in the tavern. There is a great corner table near the fireplace for big groups and Very cool vintage ski lift chairs. They often have free live music, so you may want to call ahead to see what’s on tap for the evening.

We order their pizza every Friday night during the winter and I look forward to it the whole drive north! They sell only personal pizza and also a full Italian American menu. The restaurant is light on ambiance, but great for take-out. No delivery, but only a seven minute drive.

Moat is a must stop if you have a beer or barbecue fan in your group. This is a busy spot and they don’t take reservations, but they’ll let you know how long the wait is if you call first. You can see where your beer is brewed and also buy a growler to go.

Flatbreads is a great place for handmade, organic, wood-fired pizza, salad, and beer. The pizza ovens are in full view and it’s very cool to watch them being made. A good spot for kids as you can roam the lobby of the hotel while you wait and there is a room set up just for kids to play. They can be busy, but you can reserve for large groups. Located inside the Eastern Mountain Inn (the left side, as you face the entrance) and there is parking on the side of the building).

I am a big fan of this Irish restaurant, especially if you can sit in the bar area. The food is your basic pub fare, but the atmosphere is really unique and our kids love exploring their collection of ephemera.

This is another family favorite. I love their personal pizzas and our friend swears by their gluten-free version. They have live music on many nights (call to confirm) and are super kid friendly. Their Greek salad is oddly tiny, but their pub grub and pints of Guinness are great. They also have a beautiful deck.

Sightseeing

Story Land is a great amusement park made for little kids. We started going when our youngest was still in a stroller and are still happily going with our 12 and 14 year olds. Go early! You’ll get great parking and can hit the really great rides before things get crowded. We like to start on the left side of the park with the antique cars and move back to the water rides. You can take your lunch! There is bag storage to the right when you walk in and you are welcome to leave your cooler there. Our house is close enough that you can also just zip back and have lunch at home. You can have your hands stamped so that you can leave and reenter the park. When our kids were small, we would go home to nap and then go back to the park in the evening. You can enter the park during the final three hours of any day, purchase full admission (or use the tickets you’ve already purchased), and receive a free ticket to come back the next day, or any other full day in the current season.

Attitash is our favorite mountain and has lots of activities in the summer and fall. Tickets are expensive (at least when compared to Story Land), but you can definitely make a day of it. And definitely worth checking Groupon to see if they have a deal.

Our kids would list this as their favorite place to visit (maybe #2 after Story Land and). It is a classic old fashioned candy store and also has loads of New Hampshire souvenirs. It is definitely worth a stop if you are a lover of sweets.

You can join the scores of people with “This Car Climbed Mt. Washington” bumper stickers on their cars. Or not. You can drive yourself up the mountain (I found this drive to be oddly terrifying), or take a guided tour. Driving yourself is $29 for the car and driver and then a fee for each passenger. Despite the scary drive, it is very cool (pun intended) to start the drive in hot summer temperatures and then get out of your car at the summit in near-freezing temperatures.

During the summer the baths are a great place for families to explore the rocks, ledges, cascading falls and pools in the brook. The hike to Diana’s Baths is a fairly easy 6/10ths of a mile on a relatively flat, wide gravel path. There is a large parking lot at the entrance to the hiking path and a self service pay station which requires visitors to purchase and display a daily pass on the dashboard your vehicle. This daily pass may be used at other National Forest sites as well. The parking lot fills up early, so go right after breakfast if you want a spot. You can also visit Cathedral Ledge (below), Whitehorse Ledge, and Echo Lake State Park which are all located within a few miles of Diana’s Baths.

Formed during the retreat of the last ice-age, the sheer granite faces on both Cathedral Ledge and Whitehorse Ledge are clearly visible on the left side of the road when traveling north on Route 16 through North Conway Village. There are hikes available for all ages and fitness levels. From the North Side of Echo Lake you can take the Bryce Hiking Path 1.2 miles to the top of Cathedral Ledge. (**Note- There is also a 1 mile auto road off from West Side Road ( Cathedral Ledge Road) which leads to Cathedral Ledge. A short walk is required to reach the fenced in vista area. Spectacular views of the surrounding area are possible from the top of Cathedral Ledge.) Guides are available in both summer and winter to lead both experienced and novice climbers up and down the face of the Ledge. During the summer it is not uncommon to see groups of climbers on the face.

Tubing on the Saco is one of our favorite summer activities! The river can be cold and warms up as the summer progresses, but so great on a hot day. It’s a bit of a drive from the house, so a great activity to do on your way to or from Bartlett. Saco Canoe Rental is recommended. Prices start at $20 for a 1-3 mile/1.5 hour float in an inner tube. They also have canoes and kayaks to rent.

We have only taken the “Polar Express” train at Christmas, so your experience could be really different, but I wasn’t a huge fan. That being said, if you have a train enthusiast in the family, then this could be a dream come true.

This is an easy ½ mile trail with a page from a storybook posted along the walk. It’s a - relatively - short walk, so suitable for even little kids, and there is parking right at the trailhead (there is a box where you can leave a donation). Our kids have always loved this during the winter and I’d guess that it would be just as much fun in the summer and fall.
