In the 16 century, Batavia was know as " The Queen of the East ". The Sunda Kelapa harbour was abuzz with merchant vessel from Europe, China, India, loading and selling away with precious nutmeg, pepper, tea, coffee, ceramics and exotic products of the time. Today many of the original building are still intact, the governament as design the Old Batavia as conservation area and converted the entire neighborhood into a tourist destination.
