Zierikzee is a beautiful old city on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in Zeeland. The city received city rights as early as the 13th century and has a turbulent history. In the past thousand years, Zierikzee has had to deal with hostile takeovers, city fires and wars on several occasions, but the 1953 flood disaster also left its mark. This is a brief history of Zierikzee, which is now a very pleasant destination for a short city break. You can shop here, there are plenty of nice restaurants, and possibilities for sightseeing.

Bruinisse is better known as 'the mussel village' of Schouwen-Duiveland and known as a fishing and farming community. Mussel farming has traditionally been an important source of income. Since the closure of the Brouwershavense Gat in 1971 the mussel seed has been harvested in the Waddenzee. Near Bruinisse you can also see several mussel seed collection installations. With the characteristic blue barrels sticking out of the water.
One of the annual highlights in the village are the Fishery Days. There are plenty of mussels, boat trips with fishing boats and music. The opening of the mussel season is celebrated every year in July with the three-day Fishery Days.

The Brouwersdam is the seventh structure of the Delta Works. The Brouwersdam, located in the Dutch provinces of Zuid-Holland and Zeeland, closes off the Brouwershavense Gat. This closure created Lake Grevelingen.
The Grevelingendam between Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland was completed in 1965. The Grevelingen south of Goeree-Overflakkee were still connected to the North Sea. Construction of the six-kilometre-long dam began in 1962 and was completed in 1971.
Enjoy watching the kitesurfers, go blowkarting at Natural high, jump off the water slide at the Brouwersdam sailing and surf centre or just take a nice walk on the beach. Parking is free and you can park anywhere.

Schuddebeurs probably owes its origin to the sandy soil in this area. Not very suitable for agriculture, but all the more for forestry. This is one of the reasons why this hamlet mainly became the country estate of Zierikzee. The Zierikzee regents founded their "country estates" here in the 17th and 18th centuries, of which there were about twenty between Schuddebeurs and Noordgouwe. Only a handful of the country houses have survived, namely Mon Plaisir, Heesterlust, Welgelegen, Buitenrust/Bleykzigt and Rustenburg. The estates are situated in woody surroundings.
