You should definitely check the ancient prehistoric Palace of crete called "Knossos ". It is really close to the apartment (about 10 minute ride by bus) and one of the most important monuments of heraklion. I recommend a guided tour if possible, so that you can understand the history behind each section.

If you love the writer Nikos Kazantzakis, you have to visit his house in the village of Mirtia. It is about 25 minutes ride, and except from the museum you will find yourself in a really beautiful traditional village, full of friendly and kind people. You can also combine it with the restaurant "elia kai diosmos" that I recommend in the food section

Prefer walking or going to the city centre by bus
If you have a car with you, you will probably be able to see some of the most iconic beaches of crete. The only thing is that when you are driving in the city centre, you can hardly ever find a place to park. I recommend leaving the car in the public car station(usually has many spots left) . After that it is about 5 minutes walk heading towards the Lions Square.
