Guide des Quartiers

The Saint-Germain-des-Prés district is located in the 6th arrondissement around the abbey of the same name. Little by little, a small agglomeration formed around the Abbey which was consecrated around 558 by the bishop of Paris, Germain. The district acquired its unique soul because of attraction it had on intellectuals since the 17th century. The latter would pass through Saint-Germain and leave the imprint of their talents. At the time, Saint-Germain-des-Prés was but a small village. After the Second World War, the district became the place to be for all intellectual and cultural life of Paris with artists such as Marguerite Duras, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.

Opened in 1686 as the first establishment to serve coffee in Paris, this is still a great place to enjoy a cup and bask in the knowledge that over the years, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Rousseau, Marat and Robespierre, among others, have done the very same thing. At lunchtimes and evenings it turns into a restaurant, with a decent, if rather overpriced, evening menu at €30. Metro: Odéon. Open daily noon – 1am.

This famous Parisian museum on the left banks of the River Seine is housed in the former railway station, the Gare d'Orsay. It holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography, and is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by popular painters such as Monet and Renoir. Many of these works were held at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum's opening in 1986.

The Jardin du Luxembourg, located in the 6th arrondissement, is 224,500 m2 (22.5 hectares) and is the largest park in the city. The Luxembourg garden is the site of the French Senate, which is itself housed in the Luxembourg Palace. These gardens include a large fenced-in playground that is very popular with local young children and their parents. Adjacent to it is a puppet theatre and a merry-go-round. On occasion, pony rides are also available. Free musical performances are presented in a gazebo on the grounds and there is a pleasant, inexpensive restaurant under the trees nearby, with both indoor and outdoor seating from where many people enjoy the music over a glass of wine. The garden is famed for its calm atmosphere and many statues and sculptures. On the little pond children play with miniature boats, surrounded by statues of former French queens.

The refined, upmarket atmosphere at this elegant, ancient bistro is matched by the attentive service and the decor – a modernized version of eighteenth-century formality. The simple formula – two courses for €24, three courses for €29 – gives centre stage to the food: classic, carefully cooked French dishes, with lots of duck and foie gras. Metro: Sèvres-Babylone/Rue de Bac. Open daily noon–2.30pm & 7.30–10.30pm.
