Sightseeing

Did you know that Zagreb’s roots can be found in early 13th century, when it was actually called Gradec? In history, cities were usually built on the hill and this was also the case with Zagreb whose first center was placed on raised ground now called the Upper Town Zagreb. This is the most interesting sight and you simply can’t bypass it during your stay in Zagreb, no matter how short your trip will be. Gradec was the place where aristocracy lived, but also simple and modest artisans and traders – they all left their mark. The most interesting and central square on the Upper Town Zagreb is St. Mark’s Square. But this square is best known for Croatian Parliament and Government offices which are located there. The St. Mark’s church is a sight for itself – you will rarely see such a colorful roof like this church has! The distance between this square and all kind of historical sights and museums is only few steps, so take the opportunity and enter the City Museum, Natural History Museum, Croatian Museum of Naive Art, Meštrović Gallery and Church of St. Catherine… You can also simply rest your feet during sightseeing and eat traditional Croatian food at “Konoba Didov san“ or refresh yourself with a drink in the cafe bar “Pod mirnim krovovima”.

Lotrščak Tower was built in the middle of the 13th century to protect the south city gate. Today is the best-preserved building within the old city walls and provides a wonderful view of Zagreb and its surroundings. Every day, for over a hundred and ten years, the cannon fire from the top of tower Lotrščak exactly at noon, because of a memory of an event from Zagreb history. Also, according to the legend, exactly at noon, the Grič cannon fired a discharge from Lotrščak to the Turkish camp located across the Sava and blew out a rooster (or a turkey) which the cook was taking to Pasha on a platter. After this event, the Turks retreated and did not attack Zagreb.

Ban Jelačić Square is the central square of Zagreb and its area. First of all, this is a central point, located between two oldest cities, Gradec and Kaptol. On the Square, you can see a large statue of Ban Josip Jelačić on a horse and The Manduševac Fountain. The Square is named after the Ban Josip Jelačić, a Croatian Ban (noble title) who abolished serfdom and announced the first elections for the Croatian Parliament (Sabor). Also, Ban Jelačić Square stands as the most popular meeting point. It is very usual to meet with someone “under the clock” on the west side of the square, or “under the horse’s tail” – a reference to the statue of Ban Jelačić. You can start your tour here or you can enjoy a cup of coffee in a lot of coffee shops in the area.

Kamenita vrata (The Stone Gate) is also one of the major Zagreb sights located in the Upper Town, part of the old city walls that once stood around the old town Gradec. If you are exploring the old town Zagreb, this is certainly the ideal place to start. According to a legend, a great fire in 1731. destroyed much of Gradec: houses burned to the ground, every part of the wooden gate except for the painting of the Virgin and Child. It is believed that the painting has miraculous powers. People come here to pray, light candles and leave flowers to thank the Lady for protecting them.

St Mark’s Church is one of Zagreb’s most iconic buildings, dating from the 13th century. It is located in the Saint Mark’s Square in the Upper Town. First of all, the Church is best known for its colorful tiled roof. The roof was constructed in 1880. and has the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right. Furthermore, the Gothic portal, composed of 15 figures in shallow niches, was sculpted in the 14th century. Also, the interior contains sculptures by Ivan Meštrović. If you want to explore the interior, you can attend the Daily Mass since the church is open only at Mass times. King Tomislav Square is one of the symbols of Zagreb, also in the center of the city. It was named after the first Croatian king, Tomislav, who ruled from 910 to 928. It is located between Zrinjevac Park, Art Pavilion and the Main Railway Station. Also, the Square features a large statue of King Tomislav on horseback. This is a public space, a park with trees, with flowerbeds. Most noteworthy is that in the winter, during Advent in Zagreb, the Square transforms into an Ice skating park. You can go skating, or drink boiled wine or eat some traditional winter dishes. Therefore, you can enjoy Zagreb even more! In the spring or summer, you can sit on a bench and observe the people of Zagreb. 'Zagreb Classic' is must see event which takes place at the end of June. You can enjoy beautiful concerts and performances outdoors free of charge

Zagreb funicular. It is the oldest system of organized public transportation in Zagreb – since 1893! It kept its original appearance and construction, so travel few minutes via this interesting funicular after you finish your sightseeing on the Upper Town Zagreb. The lower station is located on Tomićeva street (which is on Ilica), and the upper station is located on Strossmayer's promenade, at the foot of the Lotrščak tower. With a 66-meter long stripe, it is also known as the shortest public railroad railroad in the world.

Maksimir stadium, which is owned by the City of Zagreb and is the home ground of Dinamo Zagreb football team was officially opened on 5th of May 1912. Of course, to this day it has been reconstructed several times. Big “face lifting ” was done in 1997./1998. when all the standing places were replaced by seats and a completely new north stand was built.

Parks & Nature

A habitat for various animal and plant species, Maksimir is the oldest park in Croatia. The landscape reminds of English gardens, and the best way to experience it is to take a leisurely walk among its alleys and pavilions. You can reach the park by trams 11 and 12 from Ban Jelačić Square. If you are travelling with children, it would be a good idea to take them to the Zoo, which is located in the southern part of the park. The children would most likely enjoy the fact that the zoo offers daily feeding times for otters, seals and sea lions. Near the park, you can also see the stadium of Zagreb’s football club, Dinamo.
