Food Scene

Street food is a feature of Vietnamese people in general, and Hanoi in particular. It is really normal when you see the local easy to enjoy the foods when sitting on the sidewalk of the streets. If you once come to Hanoi, you should try this eating culture like a local one. A lot of amazing food you can find around the old quarter. But here is some suggestions food with the address: Noodle or “Pho”: The typical dish of Vietnam, very popular. The ingredients include: broth, noodles made from rice, a few herbs, and meat (normally the chicken or beef). The famous heirloom Pho kiosks in Hanoi: Pho Thin at 12; Pho Bat Dan at 49 Bat Dan Street; Pho Ly Quoc Su at 10 Ly Quoc Su Street, or Pho Suong

The Pho here was absolutely delicious until we saw the lady clearing and cleaning off the tables pick her nose and flick her bugger on the floor. We completely lost our appetite and left and hoped she had nothing to do with food prep, cleaning dishes or anything to do with the food we just consumed.

“Best pho in Hanoi” “If you go to 1 place in Hanoi for Pho Bo...” I tried 3 places for Pho Bo (beef noodle soup) that I pre-researched before my trip. I'd say this place was my favourite. The other really good place was Pho Gia Truyen. Both places are clearly popular with lines waiting to get in. Both places served quay (Chinese doughnuts) and had delicious broth. But Pho Ly Quoc Su had more variety of beef options for your soup, so I'd have to give them my vote for best pho I had in Hanoi.

“Great Phở ” Phở Sướng definitely is one of best phở in Hanoi (and may be in all Vietnam). I highly recommend you to add chili sauce, lemon juice and ask for some "quẩy" (a type of salty doughnut) for a tastier bowl of Phở.

“Not the cleanest place but the tastiest” This is a little establishment by a roadside. To be honest, I was rather reluctant to go in as it's quite messy and unhygienic environment. The endless local crowd eating there convinced me to give it a try. It was definitely worth (the possible diarrhoea) as the beef noodle soup was the best during my trip to Hanoi. Very tasty and ultra tender slices of beef.

“So simple and so good!” Located on the 2nd floor of an unnoticed building in the old quarter of Hanoi, is this one-dish restaurant. You get a sizzling pan on a small fire. In the oan there are small bites of fish fillet, marinated in spicy (but not hot) marinade. You get a small bowl of cut dill and spring onions, a plate of rice noodles for every diner, and a dish with chili oil and a dish with peanuts. All you do is throw the vegetables into the pan, with the fish, and at your convenience put the content over the noodles in a small bowl, season with chili oil or/and peanuts, and that's all. As simple as it is, it is soooo good! you can order Ha Noi bee

“Sizzling fish and greens” My husband is a chef and he rates this meal as one of his top 3 in Vietnam. There is only one thing on the menu and the restaurant is full so it must be good. We loved the experience of BBQing our food on a round cooker on the table. The twice cooked fish and vegetables tasted fantastic. The staff were friendly and very attentive- they would cook your whole meal in front of you at the table if you wished. The restaurant was full of Vietnamese families out for the night and we loved the atmosphere. The meal including a beer cost $8US per person -money very well spent!!!

“One of the best choices for Vietnamese food (Cha ca) in Hanoi” As you know, too many Vietnamese restaurants in Hanoi, if you want to enjoy one of local gourmet, Cha ca Lao Ngu is one of the best choices. This restaurant is famous for Cha ca dish (small fillets of flaky white fish marinaded in turmeric and galanga, fried and served with generous topping of onion and dill on a sizzling hot oil pan). You should try dish of fired fish stomach, which may be strange to foreigners. Other dishes are good, too.

“Silky Smooth Goodness” I was always taught that a good sign of a rice noodle wrap was a good silky smooth texture that wasn’t overly chewy and was soft on the tongue. I found that here. The best Banh Cuon I have had to date here in Vietnam (it’s been 5 days). Not a fancy place at all but that’s what makes it authentic. For some reason Banh Cuon Ba Hanh is highly rated on this site, which baffles my mind. Having been there as well I can for say this place is much, much better.

“Highlight of Hanoi” Delicious food! This restaurant specializes In Northern Vietnamese specialties- making exotic foods accessible and delicious. Try the water buffalo spring rolls, banana flower salad, tofu fried in salted egg- everything we ate was great. We also tried the corn water - surprisingly refreshing. Warm atmosphere. Highly recommended.

“Awesome breakfast banh cuon ” I had a meeting with the CEO of medical implant distribution company this morning. Wanting a more authentic local experience, he brought us to this place for breakfast before heading to Sofitel Metropole Hotel for the meeting. It was the first banh cuon I have had. The rice sheet was delicate and smooth. The dipping sauce was flavorful without being too overpowering. The ground pork patties were also delicious. I really enjoyed the breakfast dish. Would highly recommend it. (I figure this had to be a pretty decent authentic local cuisine for him to bring us to this place. Hopefully will get to try another!

“Really great fried tofu noodles (Bun Dau) - Price and opening times below” Executive summary Pros - clear listed prices, tasty bun dau, proper local experience, friendly staff but they don't speak English, use google translate Cons - low chairs and tables, there are three stalls down this alley...not entirely sure which one is the listed one here but I went to the first one on the left Top tip - 1) Order Bun Dau, you have to choose between shrimp paste sauce or Fish sauce (darker is the shrimp paste and lighter yellow colour is the fish sauce). I went for shrimp paste sauce and diluted it with lime, vinegar and chilli.

“Great local food for foodie travellers” I was recommended by a colleague to visit this place. It is a short walk into a small and rather hidden lane on Hang Khay, near Pho 24. You can ask local for the entrance. This place serves local "bún đậu" (fried tofu noodle, with shrimp sauce, you can also add in other add-ons). 3 of us ordered the mix set & hot tea. The food was freshly prepared after being ordered and tasted really good. The serving was so generous that we had to try our best to finish our food. Price is VND 45k per person.

“A great little place that made great Vietnamese sandwiches.” We'd seen crowds gather at this tiny street corner sandwich shop, and vowed to discover for ourselves what the commotion was all about. On the day we stopped by, a little old granny was in line, calling out her order. We asked if she liked eating here. She gave us a smile and nodded. That was good enough for us. We were not disappointed. The bread was crunchy, and the filling juicy and flavorful. It was as a banh mi should be ... simple and delicious.

“Breakfast” We ate breakfast here 3 out of 4 mornings spent in Hanoi. Not only because it was just around the corner from our hotel, but because the service was very friendly, it was fun to sit on the sidewalk and watch the people go about their business, and of course the food was good. We tried several versions, we preferred the chicken.

“Popular place to eat ” After walking round old quarter looking for somewhere to eat (moving on quickly from some of the pushy restaurants that try shuffle you in just by looking in their direction) we found this place. Clean, fast and really tasty food. The staff don't speak great English but service was great. We got the iron pot meals. This junction in the centre of the Old Quarter is the absolute classic night time activity in Hanoi. You really haven’t seen the city until you have spent a few hours soaking up the atmosphere and maybe sinking a few beers at the most famous Beer Hoi (Fresh Beer) spot in Vietnam. Several shophouses have plastic stools spilling out onto the streets, with beers being served for as little as VND10,000 (less than US$1) and street vendors serving steamed peanuts, beef jerky and other exotic snacks. The beer is quite weak compared to European standards, but for an all round experience it is quite something. Open throughout the day and late into the night. Opening Hours: 11:00-Late Read More...
