Sightseeing

Archeological Park of the classical city Neapolis. Give the modern town a wide berth and concentrate on the huge “Parco Archeológico Neapolis” (Archeological Park of the classical city Neapolis) for which there is a joint ticket with the Museo Archeológico “Paolo Orsi” (Archeological Museum). The 5th-century BC “Teatro Greco” (Greek Theater) is one of the world’s best-preserved and largest Greek theaters—still in use for the summer festival of Greek drama and concerts. From here, it’s a pleasant 10-minute stroll along oleander and citrus-tree paths to the huge earshaped cavern, the Orecchio di Dionisio (Ear of Dionysius), which famously amplifies sound. (IMPORTANT: free entry every first Sunday of the month).

Ortygia The tiny island of Ortygia (the historic heart of Syracuse) is linked to the mainland by a bridge. In Greek mythology it was said to have been ruled by Calypso, the sea nymph who detained Ulysses for seven years. Measuring only 1km by 500m, it’s difficult to get lost and the best way to visit is by serendipity, on foot. Covering over 2,500 years of history, there’s a huge variation of architectural styles from Greek to Roman remains and from Medieval-Norman to Baroque. In recent years, a lot of sensitive restoration work has been in progress, recapturing some of the island’s former glory. (TIP: Driving on the island of Ortygia is best avoided because the narrow streets often taper to virtual deadends and parking areas are extremely limited. Unless your hotel has private parking, leave your car at the big Parking "Molo Sant Antonio" or big garage Talete at the end of Via Trieste.)

Noto Baroque. Nicknamed "Giardino di Pietra" (Garden of Stone), this UNESCO site represents the pinnacle of Sicilian Baroque. Treat yourself to a stroll around this gorgeous town with a gelato (ice cream). This is one of Sicily’s most famous gelaterie—try the unusual jasmine and rose flavor, redolent of the island’s Arabic heritage. Noto. With its honey-colored stone, Noto vies with Ragusa Ibla as Sicily’s most perfect Baroque town (both are World Heritage Sites). Have lunch here before setting off for Siracusa. (TIP: At the end of May, Noto celebrates the arrival of summer with a very colorful festival called the Infiorita, in which flower artists create elaborate mosaics using petals).

Marzamemi This attractive fishing village was once important for tuna, as you will see from the former tonnara (tuna factory) and warehouses that are now a series of bars and restaurants. Very popular in high summer with tourists and yachties from the burgeoning marina, it’s nonetheless still a working fishing village where lobster pots and fishing nets dry in the sun alongside basking cats. A former feudal domain, there’s a crumbling noble palazzo and a lichen-covered church built of local mellow limestone. To enjoy the bounty of the sea in the picturesque former tonnara.
