When Mark and Josie Roehrman opened a new steak house in Ellsworth, they named it … Pretty Boy Floyd’s after one of the most notorious gangsters and bank robbers of the 1930s. “We didn’t want to do the cowboy thing because everybody had done the cowboy thing to death,” said Josie Roehrman, who opened the restaurant with her late husband in 2012. “The (prohibition-era) gangster thing just kind of fit the theme of what we were doing.” The restaurant is designed as an underground speakeasy and is well worth a visit. Be sure to call ahead to make sure they are open!

The Garden of Eden is a finalist for the 8 Wonders of Kansas because it is a world-renowned grassroots art site with one of the most fascinating (and bizarre) sculpture gardens in the world! In 1907, at the age of 62, Civil War veteran Samuel Perry Dinsmoor began construction of this unusual site by building a structure of limestone logs, (some up to 21 feet long) for the family home. Then, using 113 tons of cement, Dinsmoor built 40-foot tall trees to hold his larger than life figures for his sculpture garden. He stopped working on the sculpture in 1929 because he went blind! Wilson Reservoir features a rugged shoreline punctuated by scenic cliffs and rocky outcrops. The park and surrounding wildlife area offer the opportunity to view and photograph deer, pheasant, waterfowl, songbirds, and furbearers.

The permanent art collection of the Deines Cultural Center includes all of the wood engravings done by E. Hubert Deines (1894-1967) as well as various works he collected during his lifetime. His own work is shown on a rotating basis at the Center. In addition to the E. Hubert Deines display, the Deines Cultural Center features regional artist’s work and traveling art exhibits on a regular basis. Other cultural activities such as recitals, readings and art classes are conducted at the Center as well.
