While in the 'east', why not sample some Russian eats?
Restaurant Pasternak, which is nearby on the Wasserturm for some of the best Russian food in Berlin! Try to make a reservation online for a table as it can be quite popular on weekends. Their Sunday brunch buffet is amazing, with tons of handmade Russian savory pastries and desserts.
The neighboring Wasserturm (water tower) also has a few plaques in the surrounding park that touch on its dark history as one of the first concentration camps during WWII, with some informational panels on the SW corner.

The best cake/torte place ever! :) As the name suggests, you can't pick just one, so get a few pieces and share them amongst the group. There's a corner restaurant for sitting and a side door where you can just order the cakes to go.

This repurposed brewery used to be the heart of a suburb outside of Berlin called "Prenzlauerberg", which was up the hill from the neighboring Berlin. The brewery provided a local school, market and the center of life for the families of the men that worked there. It's now been repurposed as a 'Cultural Brewery' with live theatre, a cinema and open air markets almost every weekend. We're a big fan of the little DDR museum that details a day in the life of a DDR (former East Berliner) resident, with an engaging, free exhibition. This branch of the DDR museum is usually not as packed as the one near Alexanderplatz down by the riverbed.

From the gorgeous renaissance fountain on the SW entrance nearest Greifswalderstrasse, to the numerous playgrounds for kids all across the south westend and and a 'frei-luft-kino' or open air cinema on the eastend, this park is a great hub for people watching and relaxing with a picnic. Great outdoor self-guided walking tour with info panels and sound-clips that tell the story of the wall and surrounding area. There's a free museum with a 30 minute rendering of the 'death strip' and some interesting facts about the time period.
