2.2 km from hotel Vila Queirós. Oldest Casa de Fados (fado house) still in the hands of the original family. The same family have run this highly respected fado house since 1955, which makes A Severa quite unique. The original owners, Maria José and Júlio Barros Evangelista, named their restaurant after Maria Severa, a 19th-century gypsy singer who was one of the most famous fadistas of her time. Decorated with dark wood furnishings and azulejos panels depicting Lisbon scenes, A Severa's rustic atmosphere is heightened by a wood-beamed ceiling. The menu celebrates the very best of Portuguese cuisine, a choice complemented by an inspired wine list. The music, a unique blend of melody and melancholy, is performed at intervals under dimmed lighting – a wonderfully intimate experience. http://www.asevera.com/

1.4 km from Vila Queiros. The Feira da Ladra is one of Lisbon's oldest markets and over the centuries has evolved from selling unwanted second hand goods with unknown origins (hence the name of the market) to the present day jumble of antics and random goods. The market today is firmly aimed at the tourist trade with most of Lisbon's residents shopping at the Sunday The market takes place every Tuesday and Saturday opening around 8:00, the market officially finishes at 17:00 but by early afternoon all the bargains have gone and all that remains is junk. The Feira da Ladra is in the Jardim Boto Machado which is over looked by the National Pantheon. There are small stalls, but many traders simply display their store on a stretched-out blanket. Hand-made artisan goods, CD's, books, clothes, coins, antiques and furniture are all on display here, so the occasional bargain is still possible.

1.3 km from Vila Queiros. Today's São Vicente de Fora Church, built in 1582, stands on the site of one of those churches, which was located outside the city walls (hence the name "De Fora" meaning "on the outside"). It was inaugurated in 1629 but was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake, when the main dome and roof collapsed. It was then restored, and in 1855 the old monastic refectory became the pantheon of the Bragança dynasty, including Catherine of Bragança, a Portuguese princess who became the Queen of England when she married Charles II, and where lay the bodies of all kings from 1640 to 1910. The convent and church of São Vicente de Fora are such important buildings and their historical legacy so significant to Lisbon that they have their own museum to analyse and exhibit their collection of paintings, sculptures, gold and clothing. The museum, which is organised around four sections, deserves special mention for the largest collection of Baroque azulejo tiles under one roof, as well as trails showing how this art form developed – with a compulsory stop at the impressive Galeria das Fábulas (Gallery of Fables). Come and discover this unique church and its history, which dates back to the reconquest of Lisbon and the centuries that followed right up to today. Up on the roof is a terrace with superb views of the National Pantheon, Alfama, and the Tagus River.

A pleasant way to reach Estrela is by taking trams 25 or 28, which stop right outside the basilica. It is also possible to go up to the dome for fantastic city views. •The beautiful Basilica da Estrela was constructed as a religious obligation by Queen Mary I of Portugal after she gave birth to healthy heir to the Portuguese throne. The lovingly designed Basilica proved an insufficient offering, as Jose died two years before the final completion of the Basilica da Estrela. Mary grieved till her death and the miserable queen was buried in the basilica dedicated to her son.Today the Basilica da Estrela is regarded as one of the most ornate churches of Lisbon with a detailed front facade and intricate geometric marble patterns that line the interior. Looming somewhat incongruously over the rooftops of Lisbon's Baixa (downtown) district is the odd-looking Santa Justa Lift, a neo-Gothic elevator and the most eccentric and novel means of public transport in the city. At first glance, its riveted wrought-iron frame and battleship-grey paint conjure images of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and there is a connection: the French architect Raoul Mésnier du Ponsard, an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, designed the elevator, which was inaugurated in 1901. It was built as a means of connecting the Baixa with the Largo do Carmo in the Bairro Alto neighborhood, a trendy area of the city peppered with expensive shops, Fado houses, and small restaurants. Today, it is curious tourists rather than the commuting public who make the 32-meter jaunt to the top, traveling in wood-paneled cabins that still feature the original polished brass instruments. The cabins creak their way to a platform set just below the top terrace. From here, passengers can either exit and walk across a bridge into Bairro Alto or opt to climb the spiral staircase that leads to the upper terrace. The views from the top are superb and take in a busy urban canvas of pedestrianized streets, picturesque squares, and the omnipresent castle and River Tagus. You can also enjoy a wonderful perspective of the nearby Igreja do Carmo. Expect large queues throughout the summer season.

It is only 2 km from hotel Vila Queirós. The museum and church stand side by side, from the outside they are not impressive but the interior is one of the most stunning churches in the city. The church was commissioned by the Jesuits and designed by Filippo Terzi who also designed the São Vicente Church. As you enter the church you will not know where to look first. Above the nave is a painted wood ceiling and along the sides of the nave are eight chapels with splendid baroque art. The 16th century Jesuit church’s most famed attraction is the Chapel of Saint John created by Luigi Vanvitelli. The chapel was assembled in Rome using the most opulent materials like lapis lazuli, gold and alabaster then it was shipped to Lisbon and reassembled in 1747. The chapel is said to be the world’s most expensive. In the church sacristy are scenes depicting the lives of the Jesuit saints. The church also holds several sacred relics including a thorn from Jesus’ crown of thorns and a piece of wood said to have come from Christ’s crib. Adjacent to the church is a museum, Museu de Arte Sacra or the Museum of Sacred Art. Here you cans see liturgical garments, vestments and religious objects. There are intricately embroidered capes and gold and silver religious object encrusted with jewels. The bronze and silver torch holders are just a few of the highlights. There are also a collection of baroque silver and 16th century paintings.

The castle is worth visiting by force of the fact that, next to the Tile Museum, it is one of the best places where splendid tile panels (inside and outside the castle, the garden included, rendering religious episodes, battlefield sets and hunting scenes) can be admired in Lisbon. The edifice is located in Benfica and while surrounded by an exquisitely landscaped garden, it is an oasis of greenery and tranquility. The palace was built in 1640 for the first Marquis of Fronteira, Dom Joao de Mascarenhas (bestowed with the title of Marquis of Fronteira for his allegiance to King Pedro II of Portugal), in order to serve as hunting pavilion. At present, the oldest part of the castle complex refers to a 16th century chapel, but inside the castle, visitors can admire the stunning Battle Room (which stands out by the splendid tile panels due to which the room has been dubbed the Sistine Chapel of Tile Panels), as well as the Dining Room (with highlights like the paintings signed by Domingos Antonio de Sequeira). Outside the castle, visitors can search out the carefully arranged garden, which fills a surface of some 5.5 hectares, offering the spectacular scenery of the ingeniously cut hedges, tile panels and a statuary where sculptural works rendering the Kings of Portugal (chiefly, busts) are displayed. Given, as said, the castle is private property, only guided visits are available.

It is in walking distance from hotel Vila Queirós. Alfama is Lisbon's most emblematic quarter and one of the most rewarding for walkers and photographers thanks to its medieval alleys and outstanding views.  Because its foundation is dense bedrock, it survived the 1755 earthquake, and a walk through this old-fashioned residential neighborhood is now a step back in time. It's a village within a city still made up of narrow streets, tiny squares, churches, and whitewashed houses with tile panels and wrought-iron balconies adorned with pots of flowers, drying laundry, and caged birds.  It was settled by the Romans and the Visigoths (it was also an important Jewish quarter in the 15th century), but it was the Moors who gave the district its atmosphere and name (alhama means springs or bath, a reference to the fountains and hot springs found in the area). They were also responsible for its web of streets created as a defense system, while at the same time enabling their homes to remain cool in the summer.  Most of the older residents have lived here all their lives and retain a strong sense of community, although an increasing number of wealthier people are investing in their properties and moving in. Other renovated buildings directly below the castle have been converted into some of the city's most atmospheric and unique hotels, and many of the traditional buildings are now charming apartments.  The district has an intangible quality that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated, and the best way to get to know it is to get a little lost (something almost impossible to avoid), and wander around admiring the postcard-perfect views, visiting the churches, and walking up to the castle for the most breathtaking panorama of the city and the greatest sunsets.
