Crystal river is a great area for fishing, boating or swimming. It empties into the gulf. Great place to see manatees.

This park provides a lovely boardwalk around Three Sisters Springs to view the manatees from above. The manatee season at Crystal River NWR begins in mid-November and ends in late March. During the winter months, manatees come to the springs to conserve the energy necessary to survive the cold Gulf waters. Sometimes hundreds will gather there to stay warm. During Spring and Summer, you may or may not see any manatees there.

Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is part of the United States National Wildlife Refuge System, located in Kings Bay, in the town of Crystal River, and consists of 20 islands and several small parcels of land.

The Crystal River near Inverness is home to one of the state’s largest populations of manatees; they’re particularly prevalent during the winter months when the river’s temperature is warmer than other coastal waterways. It’s also one of the only places that visitors can swim with manatees in their natural habitat, and it’s fed by springs that keep the water relatively constant and in the low-70s year-round. There are several access points on the river, and many visitors choose to spend an entire day swimming, hiking, and fishing. The nearby town is home to a historic plantation and a variety of shops and restaurants for those who prefer to keep moving.
