This is the UK’s only known Roman Gold Mine Hidden in these wooded hillsides is evidence of Roman gold mining dating back over 2,000 years. Pre booked guided tours with expert guides unveil the secrets of Roman mining and take you underground into the mine itself, ending with the chance to try the gold panning experience. Mining on this site continued into the twentieth century, ending in 1938. Yours start from the 1930s mine yard where you’ll see buildings and mining machinery dating from that time. Underground tours involve an active outdoor visit up steps and steep slopes. Appropriate outer wear and stout enclosed footwear is essential. Children must 1 meter in height. You can also explore the Cothi Valley, following riverside walks, woodlands and expansive views across the Valley.

Take a tour of the only known Roman gold mine in the UK where you’ll get the chance to walk over ancient surface workings and go underground to see how the Romans mined for gold. Guided tours last around an hour and a half, and need to be pre-booked online. See National Trust website for times and prices. Spend the day exploring the estate and woodlands which stretches over 2500 acres in total. Car parking is free, and well behaved dogs are welcome at the mines and the estate. Dolaucothi is located 17 miles away from the barn, a 30 min drive through some beautiful countryside.
