Beautiful ruins of an historically important Priory that housed Cluniac monks. In its heyday it was one of the wealthiest monasteries in England. Founded in the 11th century by William de Warenne and his wife Gundrada between 1078 and 1082, on the site of a Saxon church dedicated to St Pancras. The main church was huge, with a nave of 432 feet, making it larger than Chichester cathedral. The monastery was destroyed in the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537. It also took a great deal of damage when in 1847 someone decided to build the railway right through the site. It is now a grade 1 listed monument. The priory has a herb garden, kitchen garden and an apple orchard, all re-instated by a dedicated group of volunteers. You can even see the remains of the monks' toilet, and give thanks for modern plumbing (and privacy!) Do have a look at the Lewes priory website before you go as there is a wealth of fascinating information, including the treasures found at the site, most of which now reside in the British Museum (although there are some interesting unusual cat head stone gargoyles which I understand are re-located to the church at Kingston) Lewes Priory is really near to Anne of Cleves house so it is possible to do both sites in the one visit. There is a small play park for kids adjoining the site.
