This railway was put into operation in 1925, and was abolished in 1974. The railway, via Uzice, connected Belgrade with Visegrad, Sarajevo and finally Dubrovnik. It took two days and two nights from Belgrade's Cukarica to Ploce. The renovation began in 1999, and the drive through the rocky cliffs of the famous '' Cir '' from Mokra Gora to Vitas and back is today a true tourist attraction. The railway runs through 22 tunnels and over 10 bridges and viaducts. This railway is certainly one of the most beautiful in the world. The spirit of some past times and scenes of beautiful nature will make your vacation unforgettable. Ono što je počelo kao privatna inicijativa grupe entuzijazista okupljenih oko udruženja “Šarganska osmica”, pretvorilo se u projekt koji je udahnuo novi život Mokroj Gori. Mokra Gora je postala poznata turistička destinacija. Do 1974. godine kroz Mokru Goru je prolazila stara pruga uskog koloseka Beograd-Sarajevo. Udruženje Šarganska osmica pokrenulo je ideju o obnovi nekada popularne Šarganske osmice, jedinstvene trase železnice uskog koloseka (760 mm), koja gledana iz vazduha ima oblik broja osam. Obnovljenim delom pruge od železničke stanice u Mokroj Gori do obližnje stanice u Šargan-Vitasima danas saobraća turistička atrakcija, stari parni voz „Ćira“.

Die Šarganska osmica ist eine im Westen von Serbien, südlich des Nationalparks Tara gelegene schmalspurige Gebirgsbahn in bosnischer Spurweite. Die 1974 stillgelegte, auf serbischen Gebiet gelegene Fortsetzung der Bosnischen Ostbahn von Mokra Gora nach Šargan Vitasi wurde ab 1999 mit staatlichen jugoslawischen Mitteln als Museumsbahn und Touristenattraktion wieder aufgebaut. In der deutschsprachigen Literatur wird diese Museumsbahn auch als Šarganbahn bezeichnet, sinngemäß wäre der Name „Šarganska osmica“ am ehesten mit „Šarganer Achter“ zu übersetzen.
