This is the medieval citadel, built by the Gateluzzi family of Genoa during the late period of the Byzantine empire (12th century AD). Partly restored, it dominates Chora and gives it its unique "couleur local" of a medieval town. The smaller fortresses that we see on the road that lays along the northern coast of the island were subordinate to this central stronghold. Artfully lit, the citadel creates a beautiful atmosphere during summer nights.
