2024. áprilisUpon reflection on my experience I would like to express concern about the safety and legitimacy of this tour. I’ll start with the claim that the guide claims to be the “only” person qualified in the region to offer escort and bike services by bicycle. While we were eating lunch I saw another guide who had an official uniform from the Piemonte region that had “Piemonte Region” bike escort written on it. Carlo was not wearing such a uniform and for someone qualified was doing some very strange things like suddenly crossing the street when 3 people were behind him as cars were approaching or losing 2 members of the group and not realising for 20 minutes. I ended up having an accident because he advised us to stand on the bike with the pedals parallel going downhill. He said this would “help us keep our balance”. Someone later pointed out to me that this was an idiotic suggestion since a person’s centre of gravity is higher when standing and you never see cyclists going downhill standing on cycling tours. We were all of low to moderate level in athletic ability and not experienced riders. But given Carlo is a “qualified professional” I tried it anyway (as all the other people on the tour). At some point he suddenly stopped and I overreacted and hit the brakes. The bike flipped forward and I landed with my head and back at first contact with the ground (thank God I was wearing a helmet). My leg was tangled in the bike frame and I couldn’t move. When I was helped out by a couple that was there I had wounds on my hip, elbow, knees and thighs. *Carlo had no first aid kit with him.* I had actually thought of bringing one in the morning and thought, “the bike tour guide will have a first aid kit.” I was a trooper and continued the tour despite being in pain so I wouldn’t be an inconvenience. However, I was shaken up and was being more cautious meaning that I was now the one to be left behind as I tried to keep up. When we finally arrived back at our starting point Carlo did not help me to find a pharmacy to dress my wounds. He was more concerned about receiving 50€ for the bike rental and telling me that I had fallen by myself (to highlight it was not his fault). He also seemed to be seeking confirmation of this from the other clients which was an interesting priority when somebody is injured.
I am now in a lot of pain and am worried about carrying out my work activities this week.
While Carlo obviously enjoys doing these tours and was offering nice explanations about the landscape and agriculture in the area, I’m not sure I would label this tour as safe or professional.
